Scientists from Trinity College Dublin have been working hard on creating a new plastic beer bottle that will help to keep beer fresh and fizzy. Thanks for that lads!
We love going for an awl pint here at JOE, so it?s great news to hear that a group of Irish scientists are paving the way for a new era in the brewing industry. These days, plastic bottles are rarely used by brewers and they usually only pop up at music festivals and sporting events. This is because the brewers believe that plastic can actually alter the taste of beer.
But the beer boffins at Trinity?s nanoscience institute CRANN believe they?ve found the key to creating the perfect plastic bottle. Prof Jonathan Coleman is leading the CRANN research team and their work consists of separating sheets of boron nitride, which have a thickness that's approximately 50,000 times thinner than one human hair.
The resulting sheet is then added to normal plastic bottles, but it helps to make them airtight so oxygen can?t get in to spoil the beer and carbon dioxide can?t escape which makes the beer go flat.
The added layer of boron nitride will not only improve the shelf life of the beer but it will also seriously help to cut down on costs as manufacturing glass bottles isn?t the cheapest thing to do.
So it?s no wonder why SABMiller, who make the likes of Miller and Peroni, have decided to team up with the scientists from Trinity.
Thanks for making beer taste better lads! We owe you a pint? or bottle, whatever you?re into.
