Merry Christmas, NBA Fans

?

?? ? The NBA is giving its fans the best possible gift for the holidays: a season. After 149 days of grueling negotiations, a tentative agreement has been reached the will see the NBA open its season on Christmas Day, with training camps and free agency beginning Dec. 9.

???? It took 15 hours of laborious talks on Friday, Nov. 25, for owners and players to agree on a 66-game season, but for now it appears the contingent agreement will hold. The deal in place is set for 10 years, with an opt-out clause after six years. As reported by ESPN, the players will receive 51.2 percent of the revenue, with the owners taking the remainder.

???? The new labor agreement has the players earning roughly six points less than they were in the previous agreement, when they were receiving 57 percent of the revenue. The proposed schedule has teams playing 48 conference games and 18 non-conference games, with the playoffs beginning April 28.

???? There are still a few details to be hammered out, such as the age limit for the NBA draft and rules and regulations regarding sending players to and from the NBA D-League, but for now, the important components are in place.

???? In the new agreement, players are eligible to receive a maximum salary equal to 30 percent of the salary cap after their rookie season; under the old agreement, the maximum salary was equal to five percent. The new deal will also see its owners drop their demand to cut the rookie wage scale, as well as their demand to eliminate player options for high-paid players.

???? If all goes well, fans will see a rematch of the 2011 NBA finals on Dec. 25, when the Miami Heat travel to Dallas to take on the Mavericks. The other two games on Christmas Day will find the Boston Celtics travelling to New York to face the Knicks, and the Chicago Bulls on the road against the LA Lakers.?
