California?s poet laureate, who just happens to live in Redlands, is inviting residents to contribute to his really big project.
Juan Felipe Herrera will talk about his signature project, ?The Most Incredible and Biggest Poem on Unity in the World,? on Jan. 20 at the Contemporary Club in Redlands.
He also will solicit poetry contributions from those in the audience.
Herrera?s selection as the state?s poet laureate was announced by Gov. Jerry Brown in March 2012. The UC Riverside creative writing professor is the son of migrant farm workers and grew up in California?s Central Valley. He has been at UCR since 2005.
He selected his laureate project with the help of his students, he told Press-Enterprise reporter Mark Muckenfuss.
?I created a list of possible laureate projects, like 10 of them,? Herrera said. They liked the unity poem idea best, he said.
?
Herrera plans to collect material ? from a single word to a few stanzas ? for the next two years, he said.
Those who attend his Jan. 20 talk might find out what progress he has made on the project, which he announced last June.
His plans at the time included putting bits of the poem on electronic billboards throughout the state, and ending the project with a live event at Sacramento?s Capital Park.
His talk will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Contemporary Club, 173 South Eureka St. in Redlands. For more information, call Cati Porter at 951 218 4464 or the A. K. Smiley Library at 909-798-7565.
