Return Of 'Girls' Power: HBO Series Gets It Right
Above The Buzz examines Lena Dunham's dramedy about four women living in NYC.

Blah, blah, blah. Yes, "Girls" is a lot like "Sex and the City" in the fact that both shows are about women — four, to be exact — living, loving and working in New York City. And that's about it.
Maybe "Girls" is the best "SATC" prequel that creator Michael Patrick King never pitched: It's dark with little spots of comic relief, as these women try to figure out how to get it right. And they rarely do. They are stuck in jobs that seem to have no future and relationships that make them awful about themselves. Where "Sex" was all about how fabulous NYC is, "Girls" is all about how hard (and expensive) it can be to try and make a dream happen in a town where everyone has a dream.
Perhaps the big difference is "Girls" is created by a young woman in the throes of her own post-adolescence angst. Lena Dunham, 25, the show's creator, writer, director and star, truly understands what it feels like to be stuck in your mid-twenties struggling with the pains of having to grow up. In fact, her vision of this stage of life seems to be so spot-on that it got her an assist from the show's producer, Judd Apatow. (She previously examined those similar themes in her feature film, "Tiny Furniture.")
Not to discredit "Sex." It did an amazing job capturing life in NYC as an aspiration. You too can move to NYC, date rich, powerful dudes, afford fancy cocktails at all the hottest hot spots and glide along Fifth Avenue in Manolo Blahniks.
But first you must be one of the "Girls," who also include Allison Williams (news anchor Brian Williams' daughter) playing Type-A gallery assistant Marnie; Jemima Kirke, a flighty, free spirited Brit Jessa; and Zosia Mamet, the "SATC"-loving college student Shoshanna. Dunham plays Hannah, a writer who talks a lot about her memoir without having actually done very much to get it off the ground, relying on her parents for money.
The show, which premieres Sunday on the former home of "Sex," HBO, is about trying to have it all, but not knowing how to get it. These "Girls" are from a generation of women who have been told they can do an-y-thing. But, the problem is, as most jumped straight into their careers right out of college, they never really had the time to nail down what it is they want.
This confusion leaks into their personal lives, where they battle depression and self-esteem issues. They date men they don't care much about or who don't care much about them. It's an interesting breakdown of the current state of girl power: Can these girls really do an-y-thing?
Well, Dunham and her pals are certainly trying to figure that out, one episode at a time.

Step 3
Continue to inhale the healing air and let it heal your body and make you feel serene and free of anxiety. If thoughts enter your mind, simply return your focus to your breath and continue with the meditation exercise.
Do this breathing meditation for as long as you want. If you are just starting your meditation practice, you probably want to start with only a couple minutes meditation as you will have to get used to sitting still and be in control of your mind for long periods of time.

Oil market tension 'may be easing'
Tension on the oil market may be easing, the IEA said on Thursday in a report offering some hope for the global economy, but sanctions could cause production by Iran to "plummet".
Oil prices have been on a rising trend since late 2009, when the world economy began to recover from the financial crisis, to the point where many analysts say they could now derail growth.
Prices hit 2011 highs again in March but have since fallen, the International Energy Agency said in its latest monthly report, with its 2012 oil demand growth forecast unchanged at 0.8 million barrels per day (mbd) to 89.9 mbd.
In its previous report in March, the IEA had warned of "a heady brew of both real and anticipated supply-side risks," chief among them concerns over Iran's nuclear programme, but this time it believed the pressures were easing.
"Acknowledging that data remain preliminary, first quarter 2012 fundamentals nonetheless show a clear shift from the seemingly relentless tightening evident over the prior 10 quarters (from third quarter 2009)," it said.
It said an increase of 1.2 mbd in OPEC supply compared with the level in the fourth quarter of 2011 implied a significant 1.0 mbd increase in stocks.
"Together with Saudi supply assurances, market speculation on a potential strategic stock release and hopes pinned on multilateral talks over Iran's nuclear programme, easing ... fundamentals have seen prices recently lose most of the $5 (per barrel) they gained in March."
The increase in stockpiles may mean that "the cycle of repeatedly tightening fundamentals evident since 2009 has been broken for now," it said.
"We cannot discount the possibility that prices will remain high so long as geopolitical uncertainties remain.
"Further surprises almost inevitably lurk around the corner for both demand and supply. But for now at least, the earlier tide of remorseless market tightening looks to have turned," the IEA added.
If that turns out to be the case, it will be a welcome relief after a series of weaker US, Chinese and European data undercut hopes on the economic outlook.
On Wednesday, the US Federal Reserve warned that higher petrol (gasoline) prices were clouding the outlook by crimping consumer spending, a key driver of economic growth.
Against this backdrop, Iran remains a major uncertainty amid speculation Israel could launch an attack on its nuclear facilities, sparking a major crisis which would send oil prices soaring.
Iran is due to meet officials from Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States this weekend for talks about its nuclear programme, promising to present "new initiatives" after previous sessions got nowhere.
In the meantime, Western sanctions are biting ever deeper on Iran, the IEA said, and its oil output could "plummet" in coming months.
Iran's March oil production was down 50,000 bpd to 3.3 mbd -- some 250,000 bpd below pre-sanction levels at end-2011, it noted.
Now, "the long list of countries planning to implement import cuts in coming months suggests Iranian output could plummet to 2.6-2.8 mbd by mid-summer, unless alternative buyers can be found," it said.
Oil prices were firmer early on Thursday after losses earlier in the week as the weaker data compounded concerns over the eurozone debt crisis.
New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate crude for delivery in May was up 41 cents to $103.11 per barrel while Brent North Sea crude for May gained 27 cents to $120.45.
"Prices were broadly supported by some renewed economic optimism and risk appetite in Europe," said Sanjeev Gupta, head of the Asia-Pacific oil and gas practice at Ernst and Young.
"Crude markets remain broadly balanced with supply worries being effectively countered by demand worries, particularly with regard to the US and Europe."

What we think we know about the next iPhone

The release of the third-generation iPad gave us a (very) brief break from Apple gossip, but at this point the rumor mill's back in full motion again. The topic? The next-generation iPhone, of course.
Here's what we think we know about this upcoming device.
What will it be called?
It would be surprising if the next-generation iPhone is announced as anything other than the "new iPhone"?when it is finally revealed to the world.
When Apple CEO Tim Cook showed off the third-generation iPad, he simply called?it the "new iPad." ?A look at?Apple's press release archive?reveals similar references to other products ("new iMac," "new Apple TV," "new MacBook Pro" and so on), so ?the third-generation iPad's name makes utterly perfect sense ? and is?likely a blatant hint regarding the next-generation iPhone's name.
Calling it the "iPhone 5" would not only clash with Apple's main product naming strategy, but it would also be awkwardly inaccurate. The next-generation iPhone will be the sixth-generation device in the line, following the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. Dare we suggest iPhone 6? No, we dare not.
When will it arrive?
According to CNET, analyst Tavis McCourt of Morgan Keegan said the next-generation iPhone should arrive in the fall of this year.?South Korea's Maeil Business Newspaper backs up this release date and explains that the head of human resources at Foxconn's Taiyuan factory said that the device will become available "around October." (Or at least that's how?Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft translates the publication's claim.)
The folks at 9to5 Mac believe that the next-generation iPhone will hit store shelves far sooner than that though. According to them, a "reliable source at Foxconn in China"?suggested that the device is set for a summer launch.?Digitimes points out that "the Chinese-language Commercial Times quoted Daiwa Securities as indicating" that the gadget will be unveiled at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
The Magic 8 Ball on my desk keeps telling me to "ask again later." My best guess is that the next-generation iPhone will probably arrive in the late summer or early fall of this year. (And if I you held a gun to my head and forced me to pick one, I'd go with the fall?? which would give the current, hot-selling 4S a full year to soak up the sales.)
How will it look?
Different, different, different.
While the iPhone 4S is virtually indistinguishable from its?predecessor, the iPhone 4, most reports agree that the next-generation Apple smartphone will have a significantly different look. (Though 9to5 Mac does point out that Apple's likely testing the new device's guts in prior generation's casings "to throw off leaks," so don't be surprised if you hear if spy photos of a new iPhone with an old body appear at some point.)
Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White sent a note describing what he learned about the new iPhone while visiting tech suppliers in China and Taiwan, writes Business Insider's Jay Yarow: "This will be the most significant iPhone upgrade with a four-inch screen and a new, sleek look that we believe will require a unibody case."
The folks at iMore? who've nailed several Apple predictions in the past?? disagree with White's prediction that the new iPhone will have a larger display. (Though they do hedge their bets and say that the detail isn't set in stone.) Reuters goes into the entirely opposite direction with a report that the new iPhone will use a ridiculously large 4.6-inch display.
What sort of guts will it have?
9to5 Mac's Mark Gurman says that prototype versions of the next-generation iPhone are rocking 1GB of RAM, and?TechRadar's John McCann offers that Sony's new back-illuminated stacked CMOS image sensors would be perfect for the next-generation iPhone as they are ideal for super-slim phones (and the iPhone 4S uses some Sony camera technology already. And we certainly agree with?iMore's Rene Ritchie, who suggests that the device will be 4G LTE compatible ??just like the new iPad.

Doubts surround Syria regime as peace deadline passes
A UN-backed deadline for an end to 13 months of bloodshed in Syria that has killed thousands passed Thursday amid doubts about the regime's compliance with the ceasefire terms.
After breaking a commitment to pull back forces from urban areas by Tuesday under an agreement brokered by Kofi Annan, a former UN chief serving as a peace envoy, the regime's latest promise to abide by the ceasefire lacked credibility, according to Washington.
Just hours before the deadline expired at 6:00 am (0300 GMT) Thursday, the regime's military unleashed a lethal offensive against urban areas, killing 25 civilians on Wednesday, including 10 in the rebel stronghold of Rastan, according to opposition sources.
That was the same day that Annan, serving as a peace envoy for the UN and the Arab League, said he received a letter from Syria that promised to "cease all military fighting throughout Syrian territory as of 6:00 am."
But the letter reserved the right "to respond proportionately to any attacks carried out by armed terrorist groups," a phrase used in the past by President Bashar al-Assad's government to describe opposition forces.
US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed in a telephone call that the UN Security Council, which gave its blessing to Annan's plan, needed to "take more resolute action" on Syria.
"The president and chancellor shared the concern that the Assad government was not complying with the terms of the agreement negotiated by Kofi Annan and continued to engage in unacceptable brutality against its own people," a White House statement said.
Susan Rice, the US envoy to the United Nations, said that Assad's regime has in fact intensified violence since it first committed to Annan's plan on April 1.
"Its commitments therefore have little, if any, credibility ... given that track record," Rice said.
In Washington, foreign ministers of the Group of Eight major industrial powers met on Syria and other global crises, with both Britain and France pressing for monitors to verify any eventual ceasefire.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe called for the UN Security Council to seek a "robust observers force" that would verify compliance and "could move freely" without interference from Assad's regime.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague warned that his government would boost support for Syria's opposition and seek further sanctions if Assad does not comply with the ceasefire.
"Our pressure on the regime -- its campaign of murder, torture and oppression -- must be intensified if Kofi Annan has not succeeded," Hague told reporters after the first day of the two-day talks.
Syria already failed to keep a Tuesday deadline to withdraw its troops and heavy guns from population centres.
The opposition Syrian National Council said both it and the rebel Free Syrian Army were committed to the truce but also voiced doubts about the regime's commitment.
"The Syrian people together with the international community will be watching carefully and monitoring the regime's deeds on the ground," said the Council's foreign relations chief Bassma Kodmani.
Annan was visiting Iran, Syria's main ally in the Middle East.
Russia has historically been the top supporter of Assad, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had said she would press Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over Syria during the Group of Eight talks.
Moscow, which along with China vetoed two UN Security Council resolutions that would have tightened the screws on Assad, has championed the Annan peace plan but also sought pressure against the Syrian opposition
Russian Deputy Defence Minister Gennady Gatilov, writing on Twitter, said that after the Syrian government's statement of support for a ceasefire "now it is the armed opposition's turn -- those are the conditions of Annan's plan."
For his part, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said of Syria that "all violence in the country should be halted."
"The implementation of any plan and strategy in Syria should be done without pressure and interference of others," Ahmadinejad said.
Annan is to brief the UN Security Council by video link from Geneva on Thursday, in what diplomats said would be key to the world body's next steps.
Western governments argue that a ceasefire alone is not enough and that the Damascus regime must withdraw its troops from towns and cities.
"Just ending the attacks will not be enough to be in compliance," one Western diplomat told AFP.
"It would be totally inadequate if they don't withdraw from population centres but keep troops and heavy artillery in place."

While they've captured the current record as set by the World Records Academy (which has more than 2,300 records listed online and more than 250,000 in an offline database), they're still waiting on verification from Guinness World Records, which is a lengthy process. "The theme that was decided on was to include every single task ever designated by the RGI contest. So ie: 25 previous tasks = 25 modules. A normal machine we build has 10-14 modules. The necessity to include 25 modules is what determined the number of steps. NEVER, and I repeat NEVER do I ever count the steps until the final minute. The number of steps does not matter at all when building these machines, rather displaying our creating and mechanical knowledge to solve the task in the most comical/whimsical way is what we strive for."?
But the hardest part, he admitted, was the final module, which was "a collective design by our seasoned members who wanted to experiment with a technology not previously seen on any Rube Goldberg machine."
