Uganda denies supporting Congo rebels

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Ugandan officials on Wednesday dismissed allegations in a United Nations report that Uganda supports rebels in eastern Congo, saying the claims are intended to undermine efforts by regional leaders to stem violence in the central African country.

Ugandan Foreign Affairs Minister Okello Oryem said the claims were made "in bad faith and intended to cause mischief."

"It's a heap of rubbish," said Oryem, whose ministry received a copy of the U.N. experts' report, which has been leaked. "It's malicious and it's intended to undermine the efforts of Uganda to bring peace to the Democratic Republic of Congo."

James Mugume, the permanent secretary in Uganda's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the report accuses Uganda of actively supporting the M23 rebels in eastern Congo, whose mutiny has caused more than 200,000 villagers in the province of North Kivu to flee their homes.

The allegations come as Uganda is leading a regional effort to resolve Congo's rebel crisis by deploying a peace-enforcement force in eastern Congo. The regional effort, called the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), has recently held a series of meetings in which a "natural international force" of 4,000 troops contributed by regional governments would be sent to police eastern Congo. But the force has not yet been deployed, as it lacks funding and its mandate is not clear.

Oryem said the regional efforts have exposed the unreliability of the U.N. peacekeeping force in the Congo. He said there had been a "lull in the violence" since the ICGLR started meeting over the Congo crisis, even though the well-armed rebels still control a huge part of eastern Congo.

"They want to sabotage our efforts," Oryem said, referring to the U.N. "They have been there and they failed."

The U.N. maintains nearly 20,000 troops in eastern Congo, the largest peacekeeping force in the world.

The M23 rebels ? the latest incarnation of a group of Congolese Tutsi rebels set up to fight Rwandan Hutu rebels in Congo ? launched their rebellion in April after accusing the Congolese government of breaking promises made in a March 2009 peace deal that integrated them into the Congo army. The rebels are allegedly led by Bosco Ntaganda, a renegade general who is wanted for war crimes but whose current whereabouts are not known. The rebels, who now control hills within 30 kilometers (20 miles) of the eastern provincial capital Goma, have set up parallel administrative structures in the territories they control.

Rwanda, which faced allegations of arming the rebels in an earlier report by U.N. experts, has denied the charges.

Apple iPhone 5 (Sprint)

The Apple iPhone 5 for Sprint ($199 and up) is the same physical model as is sold on Verizon Wireless. Like Verizon's phone, it takes the iPhone's traditional advantages, including a well-designed consistent interface, amazing apps, and robust retail support, and literally extends them. It's beautiful and fun to use. The difference with Sprint's?phone, of course, is the network and service plans. Sprint is the only iPhone carrier with truly unlimited data, but you'll be sipping it through a tiny straw until Sprint builds a wider 4G LTE network.

In this review, we'll focus on the difference between Sprint's model and the Verizon Wireless and AT&T units we've already reviewed; please refer to those articles for a discussion of the phone's body, software, and basic features.

Voice Quality and Network
The iPhone 5 on Sprint is a very good voice phone. Reception was solid, and voice quality was quite punchy. I had no trouble hearing a caller over construction noise in my ear, and I liked the noticeable side tone. Transmissions through the microphone from a noisy area blanked the background noise well, although voice quality was a touch muddled. The speakerphone was of adequate volume and transmissions came through clear, if nasal.

If you're looking for the ideal Sprint voice phone, though, remember that Sprint's HTC EVO 4G LTE will support "HD Voice" next year; the iPhone isn't compatible with Sprint's version of HD Voice.

The iPhone 5 also supports Sprint's new LTE network. Sprint's 3G system is the nation's slowest according to our 30-city tests, which means Web pages and app downloads just crawl along, and video streaming is often just impossible. LTE boosts that a lot: it was 21 times faster than Sprint 3G when we tested it in New York City.

But Sprint's LTE lags way behind competitors Verizon and AT&T on availability. Where Verizon covers 400 cities and AT&T has more than 75, Sprint has only about a dozen big cities and a smattering of small towns. Sprint promises to ramp up LTE coverage to more than 100 markets in the next several months.

Where Sprint wins is on service plans. Thanks to its unlimited data plan, you can stream all of the video and download all the files you want at prices starting at $79.99/month, less than Verizon and AT&T charge. Sprint's 3G network is too slow to stream much, but this unlimited data will really come into its own with LTE.

For now, you can hunt down Wi-Fi hotspots and take advantage of the iPhone's fast 5GHz Wi-Fi. Just like on the Verizon model, switching to the uncrowded 5GHz band doubled the iPhone's Wi-Fi speeds, enabling us to watch an uninterrupted HD video when streaming that had choked up on a busy 2.4GHz network.

The Sprint iPhone 5 works on a wide range of networks. According to Apple, it supports CDMA EV-DO Rev A and Rev. B (800/1900/2100MHz), UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850/900/1900/2100MHz), GSM/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and LTE (Bands 1/3/5/13/25). Sprint will unlock its phone after 90 days of use if you want to put in a foreign SIM card.?

One thing you can't do is?talk on the phone while using the Internet, just like on Verizon's model. AT&T's iPhone is the only one which lets you make phone calls while online, which is key if you intend to use the phone as an in-car GPS. You also can't?move a Sprint iPhone to Verizon or AT&T's LTE network. Verizon has (and uses) the ability to reject other carriers' phones on its CDMA network, and this model lacks AT&T's LTE bands.

I got shorter 3G talk time on the Sprint model than on Verizon's unit, probably because of weaker Sprint wireless signal. Still, the 6 hours, 55 minutes of talk time I got was perfectly decent. If you don't have LTE in your area, leave LTE switched off, because otherwise, searching for 4G will kill your battery.

Conclusions
The iPhone 5 is one of the few phones where you can count on getting the same model on multiple carriers. Sprint's model is just as good as Verizon's and AT&T's, and like on those other two carriers, it shares our Editors' Choice with the Samsung Galaxy S III. They're both excellent. The iPhone has better games, a better body design and is more usable one-handed; the S III has a bigger screen, works better as an in-car GPS and lets you bring an extra battery.

For a while now, we've been rating Sprint Editors' Choice phones a half-star less than similar phones on competing carriers because of the lack of Sprint LTE coverage. I'm not ready to remove that handicap yet. The dramatic difference I saw in Web speeds between Sprint's 3G network and LTE only underscores how badly Sprint needs some sort of 4G, and it isn't delivering yet.

If you're buying an iPhone, it's for the next two years. Your choice of carrier here comes down to how much you trust Sprint. If you believe the carrier's promises that LTE will come to 100 more cities within a few months, then this iPhone 5 with unlimited data is a great deal. If you'd rather see fast Internet speeds the day you buy your phone, it's time to look at AT&T's and Verizon's faster, but more expensive networks.

Get better at doing nothing ? Business Management Daily: Free ...

The most successful leaders delegate almost all their regular work to their staff, which allows them to facilitate and orchestrate everyone else?s performance.

So says author J. Keith Murnighan. ?Most leaders do too much,? Murnighan says. ?And when they do, they?re seen as micromanagers.?

Rather than overmanaging, leaders ought to be decision-making, negotiating and team-building. Those ?really are the essence of leadership.?

In his classes at the Kellogg School, Murnighan often asks his students, ?What would it be like if all of your team members were living up to their potential?? Then he says, ?Why don?t you just help them do that? All you have to do is orchestrate a bit and facilitate.?

But ?doing nothing? is hard for people who have risen through the ranks for their ability ?to do.? Two ways to get better at it:

1. Learn more about team members. Find out ?exactly how competent they are and what they have been currently working on.? Next, ask employees to do more. ?Not a lot more, but a bit more,? he writes.

2. Walk the floor. Ask people, ?How are you?? and ?Is there anything I can do to make your job easier?? A leader can ?help people succeed in what they are doing.?

The benefit of all this doing less? You?ll have more time to plan for the future. Team members will be more satisfied, and they?ll reveal skills you didn?t know they had.

Trulia's Housing Misery Index Hints at What's to ... - AOL Real Estate

Editor's note: The following article was originally published on Trulia's blog. The opinions in this article are that of the author and do not necessarily reflect the position of AOL Real Estate.

In our last update of Trulia's Housing Misery Index before the election, we look at which states have the highest housing misery. The top two -- Nevada and Florida -- are both swing states. However, both have also seen prices rise sharply in the last year, so their misery is mixed with some relief.

We also look beyond the election to see whether the candidates will prioritize housing issues if elected, based on how miserable their most loyal states are. Presidents may campaign on the issues that matter most in swing states, but, once elected, their policies favor the states that voted for them. Here's what it all means for the election homestretch.

The Most Miserable Housing States

Our Housing Misery Index takes two important indicators of a state's housing market and adds them together. These are:

1. The percentage change in home prices from each state's own peak during last decade's bubble until today, from FHFA. Big price drops lead to more underwater borrowers and less household wealth, which hurt the housing market and hold back economic recovery.

2. The percent of mortgages either severely delinquent or in foreclosure, from CoreLogic. Defaults and foreclosures damage consumer confidence in the housing recovery, and foreclosures hurt not only the people who lose their homes but also their neighbors.

Nevada, Florida, California and Arizona have the highest housing misery in the country, thanks to big price declines and -- especially in Florida -- a very high share of homes in delinquency or foreclosure. In all four of these states, though, prices are rebounding: asking prices are up year over year (Y-o-Y) 4.5 percent in California, 6.9 percent in Florida, 7 percent in Nevada and 18.1 percent in Arizona, according to the September 2012 Trulia Price Monitor.

Misery in the Swing States

The two most miserable housing states -- Nevada and Florida -- are "swing states" in the election, so says RealClearPolitics as of October 15. These are states that could still go either way in next month's Presidential election, and so the issues that matter most in these states are the issues the candidate will -- or at least should! -- focus on. There are now 11 swing states, which are bolded and enlarged in our chart. (Several organizations track "toss-up states," "swing states" or "battleground states" -- they mean the same thing and come up with pretty similar lists.) If and when the candidates decide to campaign on housing issues, they'll do it in Nevada or Florida. Another swing state, Michigan, also ranks high on housing misery. But the other eight swing states have moderate or low housing misery: Ohio and Pennsylvania, for instance, are critical to this election, but housing policies aren't what the candidates should talk about in those lower-misery swing states.

The Map of Misery

The housing crisis took its greatest toll in the Sunbelt. Even today, six years after the housing market started to tank, prices there remain far below their peak, and many homes are delinquent or in foreclosure. But the misery is localized. The West and Florida have it worst; the Midwest and the Northeast still feel the pain, too. But much of the center of the U.S. escaped the misery: Texas, Oklahoma, the Dakotas, and other Plains and Mountain states have among the least misery in the country.

It's Nov. 7, and the Election Is Finally Over. Now What?

Even though candidates focus on swing states during the campaign, election winners often end up rewarding those who got them elected -- and punishing the states that voted against them. (This applies to cities, suburbs and rural areas, too: Democrats favor policies that especially help cities -- which, after all, tend to vote Democratic -- more than Republicans do.) If a re-elected President Obama or a newly elected President Romney rewards the states that voted for him and punishes the states that didn't, what would that mean for housing policy?

Again, we turned to the election predictions at Real Clear Politics, and divided states into three groups: those "solid" or "likely" to vote for Obama, like California and New York; those "solid" or "likely" to vote for Romney, like Texas and Georgia; and those in the middle, which include the 11 swing states plus a few more than are only "leaning" (but not "likely" or "solid") one way or the other.

The differences are stark. Obama's loyal states need housing policy much more than Romney's loyal states do. Let's start with the Housing Misery map. Most of the low-misery states in the center of the country are strong Romney supporters. The "solid" or "likely" Obama states have an average Housing Misery Index of 32, compared with just 12 for the "solid" or "likely" Romney states. Furthermore, Obama's base states saw price gains of just 0.9 percent in the past year, slower than 2.3 percent for Romney's base states. It goes on: Not only do Obama states have more Housing Misery and a weaker recent price recovery, but they also are much less affordable. The median home price per square foot is $168 in the "solid" or "likely" Obama states -- almost twice as much as the median price per square foot of $87 in the Romney states. Obama is strong in the expensive coastal states of California and the Northeast, while Romney's strength is in the lower-cost South and center of the country. Finally, the homeownership rate is lower in the Obama states (60 percent) than in the Romney states (67 percent).

Note: These are state election predictions from RealClearPolitics as of Monday, Oct. 15. Housing data for each group of states is weighted by electoral votes for each state.

That means every type of housing pain -- post-bubble housing misery, a slow price recovery, lack of affordability and barriers to homeownership -- is more severe in Obamaland than in Romney Country. If the next President rewards those who voted for him, he'll focus on the issues that are most pressing in the states that elected him. That would make housing a higher priority for President Obama than for President Romney.

China Exclusive Hard battle against Chinese migratory bird hunting

SINA Monday 15th October, 2012

CHANGSHA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- In bazaars in Guidong County in central China's Hunan Province, villagers use a unique way to set the price of the myriad wild birds on sale: measuring the length of their necks. Birds with long necks, such as egrets and herons, sell for between 10 (1.6 U.S. dollars) and 70 yuan, while short-necked eagles and owls are priced at hundreds of yuan as the taste of their meat is preferred. Guidong is at the epicenter of...

Circle High Chair from Creative Baby Product Review | WTS Toy ...

?

Sleek and upscale design at an affordable price, the Circle High Chair is designed to include all of the features of a high priced high chair at a lower price!

Meal time can be a messy and bothersome chore. Wouldn?t it be nice to just put your child in a high chair and that?s it? With a hydraulic height adjustment system, all you need to adjust the height is simply press on the pedal button with your feet. Wouldn?t it be nice to not having to move the highchair all over the place in order to have your child face you while you continue multitasking? The internal rotation design offers quick and easy 360 degrees rotation for the seat so you never have to turn the whole high chair again!

Removable Main tray so it can be used as a youth chair and a dishwasher safe tray is included. Roomy and comfortable seat pad can be easily removed for cleaning and comes with a 5 point harness so can be rest assured your child is safe in it. Comes equipped with 3 position recline, multi-height adjustment levels and wheels (under the base) for easy mobility, the Circle High Chair is designed to simplify your life.

Features:

  • Sleek upscale, compact design
  • Air controlled piston for seamless height adjustment
  • Can be used without tray as a youth chair or at adult table during meals
  • Internal rotation design offers quick and easy?360 degrees rotation
  • Contemporary base offers superior stability
  • Adjustable tray includes removable, dishwasher safe snap-on feeding tray
  • 3 position recline for added comfort
  • Roomy, comfortable ,seat pad can? be easily removed for cleaning
  • 5 point harness for added safety

The Circle High Chair from Creative Baby is designed to be easy to use ? but is it? Well, yes and no. First off, there is some work involved in putting the chair together. It isn?t that difficult of a job, but it would be helpful if you?ve had a bit of prior experience assembling kid-stuff. Once assembled the harness holds the child well, and the 360-degree circle feature is a plus that does make meal time easier on Mom and Dad.

As with all items for baby (including toys, furniture, etc.) we can only go so far when it comes to durability. Bottom line ? this chair is going to take a pounding. The chair itself wipes clean easily, and the swivel works, but in our limited usage of the seat we just couldn?t give it five stars knowing that between the spinning and the hydraulic-style pedal for height adjustment, after a lot of use, this chair may begin to now work as smoothly as day one.

Super-stylish, modern, clean and adorable. If you like modern (and functional) this is the chair for you!

The seat itself spins easily in 360-degrees. Height adjustments can be made by simply stepping on the pedal. Not sure what additional function you?re looking for in a high-chair ? this one has it all!

There are a lot of high-chairs on the market ? and a lot with varying price tags. The Circle High Chair is neither the most expensive we?ve seen ? nor is it the least expensive. Pricing is right in the middle of the pack?

We love the concept and we love the design. Heck we even love the pattern choices for the seat itself. In a world filled with lots of stationary, non-spinning high-chairs, the Circle High Chair definitely stands out!

Overall we really did like the Circle High Chair from Creative Baby. The first thing all of us said was that it is different, but the same. Basically it has all of the usefulness of every other high-chair you?ve seen (a perfect place to feed baby), but it adds in easy spinning and easy height adjustments. Combine that with the modern look and we are certainly pleased ? and you will be too!

Despite 54% Graduation Rate, Buffalo Union Officials Campaign for Obama ? in Ohio

It?s routine for teachers unions to deploy generous resources for their favorite political candidates. They give millions of dollars and provide thousands of volunteers for Democratic candidates across the nation every election cycle. It?s not unusual for many of those volunteers to pack their bags and work for candidates in other states. But perhaps it is (or should be) surprising when they walk away from dire circumstances in their own communities to engage in political canvassing.

The Washington Post recently reported:?[Sara] Gordon works for the American Federation of Teachers in Buffalo, and she?s in Ohio as part of an effort to bolster Obama, partly by taking advantage of new rules that allow union members to more aggressively go after non-union voters.?So what is Gordon leaving behind? Try a 54 percent graduation rate in the Buffalo school district. According to the New York Times, 27 percent of 8th graders pass the K-8 test. A meager total of 40 percent pass the science portion while just 26 percent pass the math portion.According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the Buffalo City School District spends a whopping $25,106 per student, which is far above the national average. Yet the academic results are pitiful, and somehow education leaders are off in other states campaigning for President Obama.

Forgive us, but we thought teachers unions were supposed to be mainly concerned about the quality of education in the communities they serve.

But maybe engaging in politics, and purchasing favor with elected leaders, is more important to the unions.

Essential Content Marketing Tips for Public ... - Online Marketing Blog

Public Relations Content MarketingContent has always played an essential part of effective Public Relations. However, PR pros that don?t sink their teeth into content strategy, development and measurement quickly and effectively, will be left behind as the future of PR evolves. That?s a fairly strong statement, but it?s incredibly important and timely.

Over the past 12 years of running a digital marketing and PR agency, we?ve seen major changes in the world of PR and media relations as social technologies, devices and ubiquitous internet access have opened the doors for all-the-time, ?everywhere? connectivity to the web.

That connectivity enables consumers and brands alike to: ?Create, Consume, Publish, Interact and Transact anywhere, anytime. From tablets to smartphones to getting digital content via your car, the relationship between technology and people has had a major impact on how information is discovered, consumed and shared or acted upon.

These significant changes represent challenges, but especially opportunities for the public relations industry in several categories:

Who Are the Media? ? It?s no secret that news media publishing models have experienced dramatic changes in the past 5 years with strong shifts to digital and new business models to meet consumer demand of real-time news and information on any device.

The ability for individuals to develop social networks and publish information to an audience that can match or exceed a traditional publication means that influencers are no longer limited to industry news publications and media. Connecting with and creating value with many niche influencers, whether they be journalists covering a specific topical beat to a passionate blogger with an engaged community, can be as impactful as a hit with a mainstream publication. Being useful with content further enhances niche influencer relations and provides more mutual value than relying on the ?big media hits? alone.

Content is the currency for building social relationships that can boost earned media.

Brands as Publishers ? Companies are increasingly leveraging content marketing (9 out of 10 B2B marketers used content marketing tactics ? CMI) to boost owned media as well as the effectiveness securing earned media. Companies are hiring editors, corporate journalists and editorial staff to create a publishing environment not unlike many publications.

If you want to ensure your brand gets in the media, then become the media.

Emerging Technology and Consumer Behaviors - Consumers being connected to the web all the time from anywhere and the normalcy of sharing on the social web has allowed mainstream media to tap into their own audiences to capture and report news (CNN iReport). Consumers are audiences but also publishers. Expectations have changed and many consumers expect not only to be informed but to participate with the news. Co-creation of content with consumers as well as industry influencers can lead to mutual satisfaction all around.

Ubiquitous connectivity has turned consumers into publishers and they expect participation.

So, what do these changes mean for public relations? Here are three key areas to consider:

1. Convergence: The roles, of PR, Marketing, Customer Service and other disciplines are increasingly integrated.

  • PR needs to cross train for skills, collaborate and integrate
  • PR can tap into other resources in an organization to reach mutual objectives
  • PR can show more value for its own efforts

Example:

We started incorporating SEO best practices with Digital Public Relations in late 2001, winning an engagement with the U.S. division of BT because no other PR agency was pitching the value of push and pull PR. ?By optimizing corporate news content for easy discovery via search, more journalists and bloggers were finding client information to use in news stories independent of, and sometimes in coordination with, outbound media relations pitching.

Being able to achieve increased media placements AND significantly increased web traffic from the media and buyers alike to the corporate website and newsroom created a significant advantage in demonstrate value for the ?optimized? PR effort.

Now with the prevalence of the social web and connected mobile devices, there are even more opportunities to leverage cross functional resources and skills to connect influencers and buyers alike with corporate content.

2. Become the Media:?Brands are adopting publishing models in their efforts to establish better connections with customers, and to achieve a competitive advantage.

  • PR must consider it?s ability to leverage earned media as well paid, earned and shared media
  • PR is no longer a gate keeper to content, but a creator and participant in the content ecosystem
  • PR can establish credibility with other media when it it has it?s own well know media property

Example:

Media Relations can be a tough game. Journalists and increasingly, bloggers are bombarded with pitches and it?s difficult to stand out, let alone get in the door. When the end objective is exposure, awareness and influence, why rely soley on 3rd party media? Why not become the media?

I realized this after a few years of blogging when I discovered that our humble little blog had more web traffic than most of the business publications in our region. If I wanted exposure to business professionals in our target market, I didn?t need to pitch an overworked, uninterested journalist on a deadline, I just needed to write and publish a thoughtful blog post. With one click, the post would be exposed to our tens of thousands of subscribers plus thousands of new daily visitors from search and social channels.

Companies are investing significantly in the ?brand as publisher? model to create a web presence that satisfies consumer needs for information and allows the brand to info-tain, educate and persuade with content. Some companies, like American Express and General Mills are so successful at this, they are able to monetize marketing editorial with outside advertisers and syndication.

3. Adapt & Optimize. Repeat.?Technology and consumer behaviors are evolving quickly and the ability for businesses to attract, engage and persuade their public requires strong adaptability and a continuous effort towards optimizing PR effectiveness.

  • PR needs to continuously monitor consumer and technology trends
  • PR must develop a cycle of objective, audience, approach, tactics, measurement and refinement.
  • Continuous efforts to improve performance of how PR content is discovered, consumed and acted on will be essential

Example:

As our online marketing and PR work with companies evolved, we were often at a disadvantage when having to rely solely on client?s limited content, promotion and measurement resources. As a result, we provide ongoing training to clients to improve their cross-functional skills but also proactively share industry shifts translated into strategic or tactics so the business can adapt it?s marketing accordingly. ?A real-time example of adapt and optimize is the practice of Newsjacking combined with social media promotion nd SEO.

When a competitor launches a new product and gets major media coverage, a brand might decide to parody something in that message or provide a counter point and promote it through social channels as it gains momentum. Knowing people will look for more information than what?s covered in the initial story, content about the story can be optimized for search to make it the best answer and easiest for people to find.

A diversity of content types that build in social and search optimization is essential, while considering the limited content production resources. Here are a few content types that when integrated into an effective content marketing strategy, can add tremendous reach for Public Relations and Marketing:

Evergreen Content ? Create content that is timeless and can serve as a resource to the media, to bloggers, or end consumers at any time.

Co-Created Content ? Leverage industry and niche thought leader relationships by co-creating content in partnership with the brand. Participants self interest in exposure provides a built-in social promotion component to the content object. Prominent customers and partners could also participate in co-created content.

Curated Content - Some companies produce a significant amount of content but it?s not curated in a way to take full advantage for exposure opportunities. External content can also be curated to aggregate news as a help resource. Curation with added brand narrative provides a useful resource to the media and gives an indication of perspective that could be useful for their own publication. It also provides an opportunity to demonstrate thought leadership.

Repurposed Content - It?s one thing to repost a press release as a blog post, but it?s another thing entirely to plan repurposed content in an editorial plan to maximize and optimize the reach and value of the information.

If a business creates a substantial amount of content, there are many opportunities for repurposing to specific verticals or across horizontal publishing channels like email, social networks, blogs and byline articles. ?If an organization doesn?t create a lot of content, then repurposing may serve the purpose of extending the value of resources and gain additional reach without a corresponding increase in resources.

I challenge public relations professionals to take a bigger picture look at how these changes and the integration of content marketing with PR can empower the role of PR to have greater and more significant impact on bottom line business goals. Think about how content marketing can create more owned assets with which to attract, engage and inspire earned and shared media. Those same assets can work with paid media for customer acquisition objectives as well.

Along with tips and tools, the topics within this post are what I?m presenting on at the?PRSA International Conference in San Francisco this week. Here are the details:

Sergio Moraes wins at UFC 153, then has awkward celebration

At UFC 153, Sergio Moraes pulled out his first UFC win. He beat Renee Forte with a rear-naked choke in the third round of their preliminary card bout. After releasing the choke, Moraes held on to Forte for a celebratory kiss.

OK, if these two wanted to smooch, that's cool. But it seemed like Forte was uncomfortable with Moraes' celebration. In the future, Sergio, ask before smooching.

Bill Nye 'the Science Guy' Urges Letters To Obama To Restore NASA Budget Cuts

Aaaand now you've demonstrated the complete Republican departure from reality. Did you actually look at the numbers you posted? It is absolutely clear from that list that far more Democrats are willing to vote against the majority of their fellow party members than Republicans are. Let's look at the numbers in terms of percentage of members breaking from the party line:

603: Republicans 6% / Democrats 10%
602: Republicans 0% / Democrats 3%
601: Republicans 4% / Democrats 6%
600: Republicans 5% / Democrats 5%
599: Republicans 3% / Democrats 12%
598: Republicans 1% / Democrats 14%
597: Republicans 2% / Democrats 13%
596: Republicans 1% / Democrats 11%
595: Republicans 0% / Democrats 10%
594: Republicans 3% / Democrats 11%

On average, again just going from your own numbers, Democrats are willing to vote against their party line 10% of the time, Republicans 2%, a fivefold difference, and more than enough to make the difference in a close vote. If even 8% of Republicans were as willing to compromise as their Democratic colleagues are, the country wouldn't be in the mess it's in right now.

Oh yeah, here's the R code in case you want to accuse me of playing games:

# index
rollcall = 603:594

# 1 indicates members voting with party majority, 2 indicates members voting against
r1 = c(215, 227, 215, 218, 222, 225, 224, 227, 228, 222)
r2 = c(13, 0, 10, 11, 7, 3, 4, 2, 0, 6)
d1 = c(162, 173, 171, 172, 161, 157, 159, 162, 164, 162)
d2 = c(19, 6, 11, 10, 21, 25, 23, 20, 18, 20)

# capital letters indicate ratios of members voting against party majority to total part members voting, expressed as percentages
R = 100 * r2 / (r1 + r2)
D = 100 * d2 / (d1 + d2)

# package it up
report = data.frame(rollcall, R, D)
print(round(report))

# mean percentages
print(round(colMeans(report[c("R", "D")])))

That should be enough to get you started for running some significance tests if you like.

Happy Hour: 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily

Come On Get Happy! | Dr. Ink

A feisty red ale is paired with a generous portion of skewered pork belly. (Photo by Dr. Ink)

The subjects of cars and bars are intertwined at Toronado in North Park, which is named after the classic 1966 Oldsmobile coupe as well as the original Toronado craft beer bar in San Francisco.

Shortly before production of the vehicle made its last hurrah in 1992, beer aficionados up north were catching on to the micro-brewing scene and flocking to Toronado on Haight Street for their Chimay fixes. The bar, now 25 years old, remains a legend while taking on a second set of roots in San Diego.

Launched four years ago by a former employee of Toronado in San Francisco, the local incarnation features more than 50 craft beers on tap, all discounted at $1 off during daily happy hour. Most are regularly priced at $5.50, including Evil Dead Red by AleSmith Brewing Company, a limited-production brew that tends to come around for the Halloween season.

Perhaps it was because I started drinking this vivid-mahogany ale on an empty stomach that I became quickly woozy. Or maybe it was too early in the day to start dabbling in the suds. But by the time I was halfway through the glass, the beer?s 6.6 percent alcohol content had me feeling as though I had kicked back double the amount. As is the case with craft beer, you always get more bang for the buck, especially when the flavor is this smooth and finishes with an addicting semi-bitter snap.

The draft menu hangs prominently above the bar, an easy read without having to squint. Other standouts, had I not been driving, was Duchesse De Bourgogne, another red ale, but with tart and fruity notes that sells for only $8. I?m also a fan of Blind Pig IPA, Feeding Frenzy and Damnation, all of which were staring me in the face while exercising restraint. Pass the food menu, please.

A couple of skewers loaded with unctuous chili-spiced pork belly became the next best vice. The dish costs $6, priced considerably lower than what you will find at many restaurants around town that sling pork belly in smaller quantities. Actually, the entire food menu brims with good grub, such as charcuterie plates, gourmet burgers and assorted sausage sandwiches. It?s exactly the kind of food that belongs with sturdy beers.

A musician I rubbed elbows with at the bar summed up Toronado?s atmosphere aptly, saying that the high ceilings and wood tables remind him of a back-East establishment, with a solid feel and friendly folks running the joint. The only difference is that liquor and wine are not served. No big deal. Just connect with a flavorsome brew, throw a buck in the juke box and you won?t even notice.

RATINGS:

Drinks: 5

Craft beer rules the day here. The selection covers all bases, with a rotating list of more than 50 beers on tap. A large number of bottles are also available.

Food: 5

The menu is authored by a professional chef and features a variety of burgers, sausages and skewers. The pork belly with spiced chili sauce and coleslaw was impressive.

Value: 4

Tap beers are $1 off during happy hour, a swell deal considering that they normally average $5.50. Also, on Mondays from 6 p.m. to closing, all local drafts are $3.

Service: 5

With dizzying beer choices, the bartender was quick to explain their characteristics and from where they originate. Food service was also speedy.

Duration: 5

Instead of waiting for other happy hours to kick in late in the day, Toronado gives us an earlier start, catering to those of us who can handle midday drinking.

Sidney

  • Breed: Domestic Short Hair
  • Gender: Male
  • Born in 2007
  • Seeks affection from familiar friends
  • Gets along well with other cats

Sidney sleeps with his head on the pillow he brought with him when he arrived to the Sanctuary. He's on the shy side, but approaches people he knows for affection. When you pet him, he'll give head butts and raise his expressive bobtail. And if the petting stops, he'll swat a paw in the air to ask for more. Sidney has been through lots of change, and he's still adjusting to his new surroundings.

Sidney was living in a community cat colony in New York when a rescue group took him in. Before coming to the Sanctuary, he lived with a foster family, including a 12-year-old boy, who was his friend. Sidney tests positive for FIV, but FIV cats can live long and healthy lives, and it's very hard for other cats to catch. For more info on FIV, visit:?http://bit.ly/FIVcats.

Sidney misses having a home and family. In fact, he's a little depressed about losing his foster home. Won't you consider giving Sidney the chance to lay his head on your pillow every night?

Bridgette

  • Breed: Domestic Short Hair
  • Gender: Female?
  • Born in 2010
  • Shy sweet, loves pets
  • Gets along well with other cats

Bridgette's eyes look like little golden nuggets framed by her clean, white coat. The little tuft of gray on the top of her head could be her crown!

She may look regal, but she's as down-to-earth as they come. No "catitude" from this girl. As much as she enjoys keeping company with other kitties, she's more subdued and shy around new people. She came to Best Friends from a shelter that closed down. And she's a youngster, born in 2010, so she may never have experienced life with a family before. But she's settling in, so expect a brief adjustment period when she comes home with you, too.

Bridgette has started playing with a few cat toys. And, even though she?s on the shy side, she still enjoys petting, even from strangers. Just don't look for her to burst with enthusiasm right off the bat. With time, Bridgette will likely become an adoring lap cat.

Research Review: Bigger Muscle Gains and Better Workout Plans ...

Chris Beardsley is a co-founder of?Strength and Conditioning Research, a monthly publication that summarizes the latest fitness research for strength and sports coaches, personal trainers, and athletes. The views expressed herein are his.

The fitness industry can be a confusing place, with many experts providing conflicting opinions. Scientific research is our best shot at providing objective and effective approaches to fitness.?Strength and Conditioning Research?is a monthly review service that covers new and interesting scientific studies on fitness topics. The studies included help answer difficult questions about optimal fitness, training, and body transformation.

Here are the summarized results of three recent studies that were covered in the review along with what those results mean for us.

Combining Strength and Endurance Training Could Increase Muscle Gains

Recently, researchers led by Jussi Mikkola at the Research Institute for Olympic Sports in Finland found concurrent strength and endurance training is counterproductive for improving explosive strength, while it could actually be better than strength-only training for improving muscle size[].

What did the researchers do?

The researchers recruited 44 healthy but untrained adult males for a 21-week study. The subjects were assigned to either resistance training only, endurance training only, or concurrent training groups.

The resistance training was performed twice a week and comprised two leg exercises: the leg press and the knee extension machine. The endurance training carried out twice a week and increased in both duration and intensity from 30-minutes sessions through to 60 ? 90-minutes sessions over the 21 weeks.

Before and after the 21-week training program, the researchers measured the knee extension strength and rate of force development of the subjects, as well as the cross-sectional area of their thigh muscle.

What happened?

The researchers found that only the strength-only group improved rate of force development significantly, by 38 ? 31 percent while the strength-endurance group actually decreased rate of force development by 7 ? 51 percent.

Rate of force development is very important for power athletes, as it determines how quickly the athlete is able to reach their full strength capability. In explosive sports, rate of force development is often more important than maximum strength.

However, the researchers found the cross-sectional area (size) of the thigh muscles increased by more in the strength-endurance group (11 ? 5 percent) than in the strength-only group (6 ? 5 percent).

What did the researchers conclude?

The researchers concluded that concurrent strength and endurance training optimizes gains in muscular size but interferes with improvements in explosive strength, as measured by rate of force development.

What does it mean for you?

If you are doing resistance training purely for power, perhaps because you compete in a Track and Field sport, then endurance training may reduce the gains you make from resistance training. On the other hand, if you are carrying out resistance training for your physique, some endurance training could actually enhance your results.

Eccentric Training Increases Muscle Length and Flexibility

In a recent review study led by Kieran O?Sullivan from the University of Limerick in Ireland, the reviewers found eccentric resistance training actually increases leg muscle flexibility, regardless of the muscle group studied[].

In normal strength training, an exercise is divided into two phases: the eccentric (lowering) phase and the concentric (lifting) phase. Eccentric training in research is where only the lowering phase is used. In practice, most lifters simply emphasize the lowering phase in order to obtain many of the same results.

What did the reviewers do?

The reviewers looked at a wide range of databases, concentrating on those that provide the highest quality of evidence: randomized clinical trials (RCTs). They included studies in their review that investigated the flexibility effects of eccentric training over a training period of longer than 4 weeks.

Their initial search revealed 285 individual studies, but after elimination of studies that did not fit all of the relevant criteria, the researchers were left with just six. However, the methodological quality of these six studies was rated as being very high, which means that we can be fairly sure that they are reliable.

What did the reviewers find?

The reviewers found all six studies showed clearly that eccentric training improved lower body flexibility, irrespective of whether the muscle group tested was the calves, the hamstrings, or the quadriceps.

What does it mean for you?

If you use lower body stretching in your routine and feel that you don?t have time for resistance training, you could try eccentric leg muscle training, which would kill two birds with one stone. ?

You could do this by performing movements that stress longer muscle length and emphasizing the eccentric component. Good choices would be: Romanian deadlifts for the hamstrings, single leg elevated calf-raises for the gastrocnemius, and Olympic-style squats to full depth for the quadriceps and gluteals.

Periodization Could Make a Big Difference in Strength Training

Recently, researchers from Brazil led by de Lima found the type of periodization used during a muscular endurance-training program altered how effective the training was at improving muscular endurance and reducing body fat[].

Periodized training involves a general plan for sets and reps for a given number of weeks or months of training. Linear periodization involves starting with a number of workouts of higher rep training and gradually decreasing the number of reps and increasing the weight over a period of several weeks or even months.

What did the researchers do?

The researchers recruited 28 young women and allocated them into three groups: linear periodization, daily undulating periodization, and a control. In both training programs, the subjects performed four workouts per week of which two were the same, in an A-B-A-B format. However, one program followed a linear progression and the other followed a daily undulating progression.

In the linear periodization program, the subjects performed 3 sets of 30RM in the first week, 3 sets of 25RM in the second week, 3 sets of 20RM in the third week, and 3 sets of 15RM in the fourth week. This pattern was repeated two further times in the 12-week training period.

In the daily undulating program, the intensity and volume were modified in the same week. In weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, the subjects trained on days 1 and 2 with 3 sets of 30RM and on days 3 and 4 with 3 sets of 25RM. In weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12, participants trained on days 1 and 2 with 3 sets of 20RM and on days 3 and 4 with 3 sets of 15RM.

What happened?

The researchers found that both programs produced a significant decrease in body fat percentage and fat mass.

They also found the linear periodization program produced a greater reduction in body fat percentage than the daily undulating program. On the other hand, the daily undulating periodization model produced a significantly higher muscular endurance increase than the linear periodization model.

What did the researchers conclude?

The researchers concluded that, in a muscular endurance resistance-training program, linear periodization was superior for improving body composition while daily undulating performance was more effective for improving muscular endurance performance.

What does it mean for you?

If you make use of muscular endurance training and your goal is to lose body fat, then a linear periodization is more effective than a daily undulating program. However, if you want to improve muscular endurance, then a daily undulating periodization would be a better choice.

Parenting young voters: There's still time in this election season

Parenting a young adult to register to vote and to follow through and actually vote sets up a lifelong democratic habit, says a study. There's still time to register in many states for the Nov. 6 election.

With presidential elections less than a month away, it's time to remind your young voter that 18- to 29-year-olds make up 24 percent of the electorate and could be a very influential voting bloc ? but only if they register to vote and actually show up at the polls.

There?s still time in many states: The voter registration deadline in New York, Idaho, North Carolina, and Oklahoma is today (Oct. 12). But voters can register as late as Oct. 31 in Vermont. Check the 20 other states still open for registration at longdistancevoter.org before your kid misses a deadline, with no extra credit options.

If convincing is necessary, some parental talking points might include the age-old admonishment ?You can?t complain if you don?t vote.? But hard numbers might be more convincing than a lecture.

In the 2008 election ? with huge youth volunteer efforts ? young, first-time voters played an important role in electing President Obama, with their highest turnout since 1991: 50.1 percent of 18- to-29-year-olds voted, accounting for 17.1 percent of all votes cast.

"Young people age 18-29 are a large bloc of 46 million eligible voters, larger than the senior population, and they tilted sharply in favor of Obama in 2008,? writes Peter Levine, director of The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) & Lincoln Filene Professor of Citizenship & Public Affairs at Tufts University in an e-mail interview. "If their turnout is much lower, or if Mitt Romney controls?more of their votes than John McCain did in 2008, that could have a substantial effect on the outcome. In 2008, if young voters had not supported Obama, he would have lost Indiana, North Carolina, and Virginia."

Parents can play a huge role in motivating kids to get to the polls, suggests a CIRCLE? analysis of the Census Current Population Survey conducted in Nov. 2008: ??A young person?s home environment can have a large impact on their engagement. Youth who live in a place where members of their household are engaged and vote are more likely to do so themselves.??

Parents can encourage young adults to vote by noting that it is one way to promote change in an economy that is providing fewer job options while increasing the indebtedness of new college graduates due to college loans. A Pew report?found about one-third of 25- to 34-year-olds moved back in with their parents, or never left because of the economy.

Helping your child to register is one way you both can have a say on?the economy, and possibly keep your kid from moving his or her drum kit back into the house.?Here are a few resources designed to help your children exercise their?constitutional?right:

Rock the Vote: Founded 21 years ago, the organization fuses pop culture, politics, and electoral information to encourage voter registration. It reports registering more than 5 million young people in the past decade. Another way to instill a little civic fervor?in your kids is by sharing the most recent report entitled "How does your state stack up?"?

Turbo Vote: Designed to make the voting process easy, TurboVote is a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to building a stronger foundation for American democracy. Simply sign up and TurboVote tracks all of your state voting rules and deadlines, they even mail you all your forms.

CanIVote: A non-partisan site that will help determine your voting eligibility stay by state, clarifies registration requirements, and directs voters to literature on local campaign issues.
