Silversea Cruises Schedules Call at Banana Coast, Honduras ...

Silversea Cruises is the first cruise line to sign on to call at Banana Coast, the newest western Caribbean cruise destination at Trujillo, Honduras. The 296-passenger Silver Cloud is scheduled to call Dec. 17, 2014.

Silversea has been recognized by leading consumer and trade publications as defining the ultra-luxury cruise experience. In the United States Silversea was voted ?World?s Best? by readers of Cond? Nast Traveler nine times and Travel & Leisure seven times, and was awarded ?Best Cruise Line for Luxury Small Ships? by Luxury Travel Advisor in 2011.

?We are pleased to have a high-end brand like Silversea Cruises be the first to commit to call at Banana Coast,? said Michael Greve, president of Global Destinations Development, one of the companies partnering in the port project. ?It?s a testament to how we have carefully created a destination that is culturally and historically appealing to the most sophisticated travelers.?

Greve said construction at Banana Coast, which began in August 2011, is now 80 percent complete, and the facility is expected to have a soft opening in January 2013. The port will be open to host ships throughout 2013 and beyond.

?We have met with several other cruise lines and have hosted site inspections by cruise line executives,? said Greve. ?We expect that several lines soon will commit to adding Banana Coast to their itineraries.?

Plans for Banana Coast Landing call for construction of a 50,000-square-foot shopping facility and transportation hub on 10 acres of beachfront land. Themed ?Where the Rainforest Meets the Sea,? the $20 million Banana Coast project currently employs 150 construction workers, engineers and architects. A future phase will see construction of a two-berth, post-Panamax pier.

In March 2012, the developers unveiled an ambitious and diverse shore excursion program designed to offer something for everyone, including cultural, soft-adventure and eco-tour offerings.

The tours enable guests to explore the area from land, air and sea. In addition to the signature tour ? Campo del Mar Nature Park & Beach Break ? highlights include a VIP airplane ride to the Mayan ruins at Copan; a snorkeling adventure at a beautiful starfish bank, and kayaking in the pristine Guaimoreto Lagoon. Guests looking to stay on land have the chance to discover the port?s appeal through an exciting mountain ATV ride, a culinary tasting tour or a trolley ride through the colonial town of Trujillo.

Future plan phases include creation of the 100-acre Campo del Mar, which will incorporate an integrated heritage park, river park, wildlife park and nature park ? all easily accessible from Banana Coast Landing.

Is your couch giving you cancer?

Many sofas contain flame-retardant chemicals ? some of which have been linked to health problems ? according to a new study

You might want to reconsider your tendency to curl up on your couch after a long, grueling day. A new study?from the journal Environmental Science and Technology found that many sofas contain chemicals linked to cancer, fertility problems, and developmental delays in children, and a lot of these toxins aren't labeled.

A little background: Every year, manufacturers use 3.4 billion pounds of flame-retardant chemicals in furniture and other household items to prevent them from catching fire when exposed to open flame. California requires upholstered furniture to be flame-retardant, and, according to NPR, "most manufacturers find it easier to use the same foam in all their furniture, rather than just use retardants in sofas that are bound for California." But many of these chemicals are dangerous for humans ? they tend to "leach" into the air and bond with dust particles we breathe ? and studies have found that they're not even effective at retarding flames.??

SEE ALSO: Los Angeles adopts Meatless Monday: Should more cities follow suit?

For this study, researchers examined foam samples from couches found in California homes and bought between 1985 and 2010. Among the flame-retardant chemicals that have been used in couches, the most common is Tris phosphate, which was listed by the state of California as a carcinogen in 2011 and was banned from baby clothes in the '70s. PentaBDE, the second most common chemical, was banned in 172 countries and 12 U.S. states after being linked to fertility problems and lower IQ and motor-function problems in children. And then there's Firemaster 550, which has been linked to rapid weight gain and early onset of puberty.

Researchers discovered that 85 percent of the couches they studied contained these flame-retardant chemicals. Sixty-four percent of those couches had no label. "There's no way to find out if [a sofa] does or doesn't" contain flame retardants, says Heather Stapleton, an associate professor of environmental chemistry at Duke University and author of the study. While some of these chemicals have been banned or phased out in recent years (PentaBDE was banned in California in 2004), most people keep their couches for 15 years or more.

The American Chemistry Council says that, although these chemicals are present, the study does not indicate "that the levels of flame retardants found would cause any human health problems." If you want to take precautionary measures, but aren't ready throw out your couch, a co-author of the study suggests regular vacuuming or wet-mopping to help reduce dust levels.

    Why Use Twitter for Business?

Customer Service TweetsHaving difficulty seeing how Twitter could possibly benefit your business? Think only the big brands or celebrities can get value out of tweeting?

    Consider this:

No matter what type of business you?re in, a percentage of your customer base is active on Twitter. In today?s competitive market, it?s crucial to engage with your customers and potential customers wherever they spend time.

Using Twitter for Relationship and Reputation Management

47% of social media users actively seek customer service through social channels. They are using Twitter to vent about bad customer service, faulty products, unprofessional behavior and every kind of complaint you can think of. Smart companies are monitoring Twitter for mentions of their brand so they can respond to these complaints before they spiral out of control.

People also use Twitter for kudos and for making recommendations. If you?re not participating, you?re unaware of both the smackdowns and the high fives.

With more and more news sources, bloggers and consumer advocates recommending that people take their complaints to Twitter, your business needs to be proactive. Create a Twitter account if you don?t already have one, build a positive reputation there by engaging with your target audience and begin monitoring for all mentions of your business.

Thank people for their tweets, and immediately respond to both positive and negative tweets. Don?t be defensive! Don?t correct people, don?t argue. If someone posts a negative comment about your business, give them a phone number or email address they can use to give you the details about what happened. Then resolve the issue offline as quickly as possible while thanking them publicly for bringing it to your attention. Anyone watching will see that you?re responsive and that you care. Plus it?s an opportunity to turn an unhappy complainer into a fan. The more honest and gracious you are publicly, the more social points you score and the more responsive you are offline, you may be able to avert a social media disaster.

    Android 102: Wireless file transfer

    Wifi File Explorer

I use Linux for my PC operating system. That means I don't get any fancy Android File Transfer programs to use to copy files on and off of my devices, and setting up MTP support is a hassle -- not to mention the closed nature of the whole mess. I can use the command line and adb to copy files back and forth, and sometimes I do, but the easy way is to use an app that acts as a remote server and "browse" my files with Chromium or Firefox. They also work with Windows or Mac OS for those times when you don't want to look for a cable.

There are plenty of apps available that will work. Airdroid is a pretty popular one that also offers the ability to send and receive SMS message through your PC. It's also free, and free is always good. I like things a bit more lightweight and simple, so I use Wifi File Explorer Pro. It's not free ($0.99) and doesn't let you text from your PC. It's just the first one that was made available and I hate change. My point is, there's plenty of apps that will work, and they all work basically the same.

    1. Grab the app from Google Play, install it, and run it.
    2. The app will tell you a URL to put in your browser. You may need a code or need to scan a barcode to log in.
    3. When the page loads, you see everything that's on your phone storage, and can transfer files both ways, or play music or video.

The apps are actually running a tiny web server on your phone, so the result acts like a website. You will need to have both machines on the same Wifi, and in theory a cable is faster, but wireless file transfer is pretty darn easy.

Scientists identify depression and anxiety biomarker in youths

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered a cognitive biomarker -- a biological indicator of a disease -- for young adolescents who are at high risk of developing depression and anxiety. Their findings were published today, 28 November, in the journal PLOS ONE.

The test for the unique cognitive biomarker, which can be done on a computer, could be used as an inexpensive tool to screen adolescents for common emotional mental illnesses. As the cognitive biomarker may appear prior to the symptoms of depression and anxiety, early intervention (which has proven to be one of the most effective ways of combatting mental illness) could then be initiated.

For the study, 15-18 year old participants underwent genetic testing and environmental assessment, an exercise which would currently be too expensive and take too long to use as a widespread method of screening. The adolescents were then given a computer test to gauge how they process emotional information. The test had the participants evaluate whether words were positive, negative or neutral (examples included 'joyful' for positive, 'failure' for negative, and 'range' for neutral).

Those adolescents with a variation of one gene (the short form of the serotonin transporter) as well as exposure to intermittent family arguments for longer than six months and violence between parents before the age of six were shown to have marked difficulty in evaluating the emotion within the words, indicating an inability to process emotional information. Previous research associated a maladjusted perception and response to emotions, as seen here, with a significantly increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Professor Ian Goodyer, Principal Investigator on the study from the University of Cambridge, said: "Whether we succumb to anxiety and depression depends in part on our tendencies to think well or poorly of ourselves at troubled times. How it comes about that some people see the 'glass half full' and think positively whereas other see the 'glass half empty' and think negatively about themselves at times of stress is not known.

"The evidence is that both our genes and our early childhood experiences contribute to such personal thinking styles. Before there are any clinical symptoms of depression or anxiety, this test reveals a deficient ability to efficiently and effectively perceive emotion processes in some teenagers -- a biomarker for low resilience which may lead to mental illnesses."

The scientists hope that their research could lead to developing inexpensive cognitive tests to screen for these illnesses, particularly in people identified as being at high social and genetic risk.

Dr Matthew Owens from the University of Cambridge added: "Having difficulty in processing emotions is likely to contribute to misunderstanding other people's intentions and can make individuals emotionally vulnerable. This research opens up the possibility of identifying individuals at greatest risk and helping them with techniques to process emotions more easily or training them to respond more adaptively to negative feedback."

Professor Goodyer further stated: "These types of cognitive biomarker can also be used to aid therapeutics by helping to determine which treatments are likely to work best for types of depressions and anxiety disorders. This is important, as although we have good treatments we do not yet know what works best for whom."

Professor Barbara Sahakian, a co-author on the paper from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge said: "The way we perceive and respond to emotions affects our resilience and whether we succumb to depression and other maladaptive ways of thinking. Using the biomarker identified in this study, it is possible to develop a screening programme to identify those at greatest risk."

Mental health problems are common in young people with approximately 10% of children (aged 5-16 years old) in Great Britain being assessed as having a mental disorder of some kind including conduct disorder, emotional disorder or hyperactivity. In addition, adolescence is a critical period for the development of depressions.

Chinese paper deletes story after falling for ?The Onion? spoof

A CHINESE NEWSPAPER which acts as the official mouthpiece for the ruling Communist regime has deleted an online article covering Kim Jong-Un?s latest accolade: his title as the ?Sexiest Man Alive?.

The website of the People?s Daily newspaper ran the story based on the accolade, which had been awarded by the satirical US newspaper The Onion ? with no evident knowledge or appreciation of The Onion?s comedic goals.

Stories had appeared in both the English and Chinese versions of the website, and carried quotes from The Onion?s hitherto unmentioned ?Style and Entertainment editor? Marissa Blake-Zweibel.

?He has that rare ability to somehow be completely adorable and completely macho at the same time,? The Onion?s original article had quoted Blake-Zweibel as saying of the North Korean 30-year-old, who succeeded his late father Kim Jong-Il in December 2011.

?He?s a real hunk with real intensity who also knows how to cut loose and let his hair down,? she said, adding that his new wife Ri Sol-ju was ?one lucky lady, that?s for sure!?

The Chinese title appeared to take the award at face value ? running a story carrying Blake-Zweibel?s comments alongside a 55-photograph gallery showing North Korea?s 30-year-old head of state in various poses.

It is not unusual for the Chinese State media to carry content which casts North Korea and its other international allies in a positive light ? but the deadpan manner in which the story was covered prompted a flurry of links, as users suspected China had failed to understand the less-than-serious tone of The Onion?s reportage.

This was confirmed overnight when the People?s Daily website removed its article, offering only ?error 404? links to anyone who tried to access it. The brief story is still available through Google?s cache, however, and includes a large photo of the North Korean leader sitting on a horse.

The Onion said previous winners had included Bernie Madoff, Bashar al-Assad, the Koch brothers, and T. Herman Zweibel, who in The Onion?s canon is named as the paper?s ?publisher emeritus?.

A later update to The Onion?s article acknowledged the Chinese pick-up, describing the People?s Daily as ?a proud Communist subsidiary of The Onion, Inc.?

    ?Exemplary reportage, comrades,? it said.

The appearance of the surname ?Zweibel? in the article (twice) may have been a hint as to the paper?s satirical origins: the word is a slight misspelling of ?Zwiebel?, the German translation for ?onion?.

Syrian war clouds Turkish plan to clear land mines

AKINCI, Turkey (AP) ? For two people walking into a Turkish minefield, they looked awfully assured.

The pair strode in from Syria on a recent afternoon, following a faint track across the grassy plain. They slipped into Turkey through a fence near a vacant military watchtower and vanished into an olive grove.

Such hazardous crossings are a smuggler's tradition at the border, where Turkish plans to clear a vast belt of land mines have been clouded by Syria's civil war. Last week, Turkey asked NATO allies to deploy Patriot missiles as a defense against any aerial attacks from Syria after shells and bullets spilled across the border, killing and injuring some Turks.

Starting in the 1950s, Turkish forces planted more than 600,000 U.S.-made "toe poppers" ? mines designed to maim, not kill ? and other land mines along much of its 900-kilometer (560-mile) border with Syria, which runs from the Mediterranean Sea to Iraq. The aim was to stop smugglers whose cheap black market goods undercut the Turkish economy and later to thwart Kurdish rebels from infiltrating Turkey's southeast.

However, the mines also killed and maimed civilians, took arable land from Turkish farmers and are now considered by many as a crude method of policing.

Turkey says it plans to clear anti-personnel mines on the Syria border by 2016, missing a March 2014 deadline required by the international Mine Ban Treaty. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines, a Geneva-based group that won the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, has criticized Turkey for its slow progress.

The European Union has committed ?40 million ($52 million) to demining and surveillance equipment near Turkey's borders with Iran and Armenia on the basis that Turkey could eventually become the EU's most eastern border. Turkey, adjacent to the Middle East and Central Asia, has long been a drug trafficking route and a transit point for migrants who enter Europe illegally.

Since last year, nearly 200,000 Syrian refugees have crossed into Turkey, mostly through border posts or areas known to be free of mines. A Syrian man and two children were reported killed in August, however, by an explosive in an area of Mardin province that had been mined by the Turkish military. Syrian forces last year were also suspected of laying some mines to stem an embarrassing refugee flight into Turkey.

A Turkish smuggler in the border village of Akinci, south of the city of Gaziantep, said he has charged Syrian refugees up to 25 Turkish lira ($14) each to lead them through Turkish minefields. He has also acted as a lookout, monitoring shifts of Turkish military sentries and telling another smuggler who escorts Syrian clients, usually before dawn.

"I don't know where they are going. I don't care," said the gaunt man, who would not give his name and claimed he was desperate for cash. "I know it's risky for me, but I have to do it."

According to lore, villagers used to enter the Akinci mosque, which lies beside a minefield, for prayers and then sneak out the back into Syria for business.

On foot, mule or motorcycle, smugglers traditionally brought in items from Syria, including tea, gasoline, cigarettes, electronics and livestock, to sell for a profit in Turkey. The Syrian war has disrupted but not extinguished the trade among communities that were abruptly divided when the border was drawn in the last century.

Some smugglers try their luck at border posts, which became easier to cross when visa requirements were removed in 2009 after the warming of ties between Turkey and Syrian President Bashar Assad, now an enemy because of his attacks on the Syrian opposition. A few weeks ago, a Syrian man was detained while trying to enter Turkey with gold bars in his waistband.

Approved traffic moves the other way, as Turkey and other nations that oppose Assad send logistical and humanitarian aid to Syrian rebels and civilians. While Turkey says it is not arming the insurgency, Syrian rebels have told The Associated Press they receive some weapons and ammunition from the Turkish side with only sporadic interference from border patrols. According to rebels, these weapons are bought with funding from rich Syrians or sympathetic Gulf Arabs.

Fences are down and cars can cross in some parts adjoining Syria's Idlib province, an opposition stronghold.

The first mines on the Syrian border were planted after smugglers killed two customs agents in 1956. Turkey laid more mines in the 1980s and 1990s, at the height of its war with the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which was backed by Syria. Turkey is again worried about possible infiltration by Kurdish rebels who are cheered by an autonomy grab by their ethnic brethren in Syria.

The Turkish defense ministry told the AP it started evaluating bids from demining companies in July and would sign contracts once the assessment is complete.

"Developments in Syria to this day have not affected our plans or work," the ministry said. NATO said it is assisting with "technical preparations" for the mine clearance.

Cenk Sidar, managing director of Sidar Global Advisors, a Washington-based consultancy, said he believed that Turkey would sign contracts but wait until the Syrian civil war is resolved.

"According to plans, the government will build electronic border surveillance systems simultaneously with the demining. Even this seems too risky at this point," Sidar wrote in an email. "It may take a few years, and some qualified/selected firms may change their pricing or conditions due to the increasing instability."

Between 2010 and 2011, a Turkish firm, Nokta, and a partner from Azerbaijan cleared more than 1,200 mines around an archaeological site, Karkemish, on the Syrian border. They found anti-tank mines and M14 mines known as "toe poppers." It was hard to work with metal detectors because the soil also contained remnants of coins and other ancient fragments; some mines had to be dug out by hand rather than detonated to avoid damaging cultural treasures.

There is no reliable data for casualties from mines laid by the Turkish military, whose fight with the PKK has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The rebels, who regularly target security forces with mines and roadside bombs, took up arms in 1984 in the name of Kurdish rights; Turkey and the West label them terrorists.

Residents around Akinci recalled a villager who lost a limb to a mine several years ago while cutting trees for military sentries. Halil Kaya, 64, said he had heard of several dozen people over the decades who were killed or injured by mines. A deep furrow runs down Kaya's right forearm from a Turkish military bullet in his days as a smuggler.

Mehmet Dagdeviren, 49, said the Turkish military had softened and now might only fire warning shots at smugglers. He interrupted the chat to take a phone call, then rushed to a car and drove away.

Fake Craigslist Job Ads May Lead to Identity Theft - FindLaw's ...

If you're unemployed, underemployed, or unhappily employed, Craigslist job ads are probably a regular stop in your browser of choice.

But if you're relying on the popular website's classified ads to find employment opportunities, you also have to watch out for employment scams. Not every job posted on Craigslist reflects a position in the real world that's worth applying for, according to an article at UnemploymentHandbook.com.

It's a waste of time to write out a resume and cover letter for a job that's not even there, so here are some signs of a potential scam when you're looking at job ads online:

    1. No skills required. Sure it's nice to find entry-level jobs, but even those require some skills, even if it's just using a computer. Hundreds of people are applying for these jobs, which makes your chances pretty slim, so it may not be worth your time unless the job looks amazing. If you see a high salary combined with "no skills required," it's almost certainly a scam.

    2. "Mystery shopper" positions. Jobs for mystery shopping where the mystery-shopping "employee" gets a check and wires leftover money back to a "company" are bad news. Those kinds of wire transfer schemes are almost always scams to cheat you out of your money when the checks bounce. If an ad asks you to do that, run the other way.

    3. Ads that seek unnecessary personal info. For a job application, all you should have to submit is your name and prior work experience. Bank information and credit reports are not relevant, and it's generally not legal for employers to ask for them during interviews anyway. Don't give out personal information when you're applying for a job unless you want to be a victim of identity theft. You can always provide it when you're hired, if necessary.

    4. No company name. When you're applying to jobs, it's helpful to do some homework on the hiring companies so you know if they will be a good fit. That's impossible to do if there's no company name in the ad. It also makes it less likely the job is legitimate, since employers want you to gauge your interest in the company before applying. If you don't see a company name, you may not want to apply.

    5. Ads that redirect. The majority of Craigslist ads allow you to respond directly to the email provided with your cover letter and resume. But some redirect you to a new website and ask you to fill out information on that page instead. Large corporations like hotel chains may work this way, but it's unlikely legitimate smaller employers would go to this trouble. In general, it's best to steer clear of these ads, and instead look for ones that will accept your job application directly.

Canada's Carney named as surprise Bank of England chief

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain named Canadian central bank chief Mark Carney on Monday as the next governor of the Bank of England, springing the surprise choice of a foreigner to help steer the world's sixth-largest economy out of stagnation.

A former Goldman Sachs investment banker who as central bank head guided the Canadian economy through the global economic crisis, Carney will succeed Mervyn King who retires next July.

"He is quite simply the best, most experienced and most qualified person in the world to be the next Governor of the Bank of England," finance minister George Osborne told parliament in announcing the appointment.

During the crisis, Carney helped to make Canada's recession one of the shallowest of the world's richest nations. No Canadian bank needed government help, and the country recovered all the jobs it lost in the downturn relatively rapidly.

By contrast, Britain had to bail out some of its biggest banks and the economy is struggling to achieve growth four years after the crisis broke.

Carney also heads the Financial Stability Board (FSB), a Basel-based body that sets global banking rules.

"This will be a very important transitional phase for both the institution itself, the Bank of England, but above all for the British economy," Carney told a news conference in Ottawa.

From next year the BoE will take charge of British financial regulation, almost doubling its size. This boosted the case for a governor with strong management skills and financial market experience, rather than someone in King's academic mould.

Carney said he would help the British economy as it tries to reduce its reliance on financial services.

"I can play a constructive role ... in relaunching this institution with its new responsibilities, contributing to price stability, to financial stability and to ensuring that the rebalancing of the UK economy - which is underway - ... is seen through over the course of the next five years."

Carney's past as a Goldman Sachs investment banker has been a double-edged sword, as he fought to prove his loyalties lie with ordinary citizens, not his high-flying banker ex-colleagues. He clashed memorably last year with JPMorgan Chase & Co Chief Executive Jamie Dimon in Washington as the banker argued against new regulations for the financial sector.

    HUGE SURPRISE

Until now, Carney had strongly played down the possibility of heading the British central bank. "(It's a) surprise, huge surprise," said Peter Dixon, an economist with Commerzbank. "That was the one guy I didn't have in the running."

The athletic-looking Carney will now become Britain's most powerful unelected public figure, responsible for setting interest rates and looking after the banking sector.

Britain's government had been widely expected to pick Deputy Governor Paul Tucker as the new chief, ignoring calls for a more radical option to shake up the central bank.

"Mr. Carney is unique amongst the potential candidates in combining long experience of central banking, huge international credibility in economics, deep expertise in financial regulation and a firsthand experience of private sector financial institutions," Osborne said.

The foreign exchange market passed a rapid judgment on the announcement with sterling rising against both the U.S. and Canadian dollars. The pound hit to a 2-1/2 week high against the Canadian dollar to C$1.5950 from C$1.5898 beforehand.

Pressure on Carney will be high and financiers in the City of London would expect him to act quickly to jolt Britain's $2.5 trillion economy out of stagnation, prevent bubbles and keep the financial sector safe.

Carney is not a British national, although Osborne said he would apply for UK citizenship. He studied at Oxford University.

Carney will serve at the Bank of Canada until May, and then starts at the Bank of England in July. He will serve a five-year term, rather than the eight-year term that had been expected for the next BoE governor.

"Perhaps one factor in Carney's favor is the Canadian banks were very highly regulated before the credit crisis and accordingly the Canadian banking system is in good shape," said Philip Shaw of Investec.

"One thing we would expect is the new governor sets about delegating responsibility very quickly, given the enormity of the tasks that the Bank of England is taking on."

Other figures earlier named as possible successors had included Financial Services Authority chairman Adair Turner, John Vickers, author of a government report on bank reform, and Terence Burns, a former top finance ministry civil servant.
