Ryan: Explaining tax plan math too time-consuming

(AP) ? Paul Ryan says it would take too long to explain the numbers behind the tax plan that he and Mitt Romney are proposing.

The Republican vice presidential nominee says he and Romney want a 20 percent cut in all income tax rates. He says they would pay for those cuts by closing loopholes and deductions.

President Barack Obama and Democrats have hammered Romney and Ryan for refusing to say until after the election which tax loopholes they would close.

Ryan told "Fox News Sunday" that "it would take me too long to go through all the math."

Ryan said he and Romney would start by closing loopholes for higher-income Americans.

Liberty Caucus will challenge GOP Establishment at New Hampshire convention

In a letter yesterday, Carolyn McKinney, Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire, told supporters that the Caucus plans to stand firmly with the grass roots of the Republican Party. McKinney said the RLCNH will offer a bold resolution at the GOP state convention that condemns the establishment rules that were wrongfully enacted at the GOP National Convention in Tampa. The following statement appeared on the RLCNH website:

"In Tampa earlier this summer, RNC management showed a blatant disregard for the party rules by removing legitimately elected delegates, removing members of the rules committee or preventing them from voting, silencing dissent, and disregarding the results of votes. Because such fraud and coercion were used to pass new rules that reduce the power and autonomy of state and local party organizations and impose a top-down structure of governance in place of the party?s traditional bottom-up structure, the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire is proposing a resolution from the New Hampshire Republican Party that outright rejects the rules changes."

"We are asking Republican delegates in New Hampshire to respect the value of their own legitimate power by passing this RLCNH-proposed resolution,? McKinney said. ?We hope to restore the traditional principles to the RNC that we already know and love here in New Hampshire. Only when state primaries and processes are given the respect they deserve can we expect our First in the Nation Primary status to mean something again. If the national rule changes remain, our primary will become a facade.?

Women clam up in meetings, study finds

Tetra Images / Getty Images

When attending meetings, women need to speak up more, a new study claims.

By Dana Macario, TODAY contributor

Women may be showing up for meetings, but that doesn?t necessarily mean they?re speaking up at those meetings.

In a recent study, researchers at Brigham Young University and Princeton University found that in a typical meeting where decisions get made, women are clamming up, speaking 25 percent less than their male counterparts.

The study, published in the American Political Science Review, found that when women find themselves in the minority they tend to keep their thoughts to themselves. Interestingly, when a guy is the token male in a group, he isn't at all likely to find himself tongue-tied.

While the decision to remain silent can be good if you?re ever arrested, if you?re hoping to be recognized as a leader, keeping your mouth shut is not such a smart choice. The study found that group members who had a lot to say were more likely to be seen as influential. So it comes as no surprise that with women talking less, fewer women were recognized as leaders.

?In school boards, governing boards of organizations and firms, and legislative committees, women are often a minority of members, and the group uses majority rule to make its decisions,? said study co-author Tali Mendelberg of Princeton. ?These settings will produce a dramatic inequality in women?s floor time and in many other ways. Women are less likely to be viewed and to view themselves as influential in the group and to feel that their ?voice is heard.??

Although women often freeze up in meetings where they?re in the minority and the group needs to arrive at a majority-rules decision, there are situations where women will open up and share their thoughts. ?Once women form the majority of the group, they?ll really start talking and will be more likely to assume leadership roles. Also, if a group has to arrive at a unanimous decision, women are again more likely to speak up. ?When a group has to reach a unanimous decision, women recognize that every vote is equally important, prompting them to feel the need to contribute something to the overall effort and discussion.

The study?s researchers noted that women not only flourished when the group had to build consensus, but discussions began to take a different tone as well. When women took more active roles, the whole vibe of the group changed. The researchers found those groups to be more positive, more inclusive and have fewer negative interruptions than the male-dominated discussion.

?Women have something unique and important to add to the group, and that?s being lost, at least under some circumstances,? said Chris Karpowitz, the study?s co-author and an assistant professor at BYU.

The study focused on 94 groups made up of five individuals each. Group members were asked to perform ?work? tasks to earn hypothetical amounts of money. Each individual was told they would take home earnings based on both performance and the group?s decision about how to redistribute the money earned as a whole. The groups were told to distribute the money in the ?most just? way. On average, groups deliberated for 25 minutes, even though they were only required to deliberate the distribution system for five minutes. Participants voted by secret ballot, but half of the groups followed majority rule while the other half decided only with a unanimous vote.

Not only did the tone of the discussions change when women participated more, but the substance of the discussions shifted as well. When given the task of setting a group?s minimum wage, women tended to include discussions of family need and issues of care in the discussions. Researchers noted that women were more likely to ask questions like, ?How does this affect a family?? or ?How would a single woman do this?? And, what they were saying wasn?t just girl talk; girl action took place as well. Groups with a majority of women and groups led by consensus building were more generous with their reallocation of money.

?When women are silent, they?re not just silent and someone else is making the argument they would have made anyway,? Karpowitz said, recognizing the loss of ideas when women fail to give their input.

Dana Macario is a Seattle-area writer.

Mich. senators draft new law if voters say no

LANSING, Mich. (AP) ? The leader of the Michigan Senate said he and fellow Republican colleagues are armed with a proposal to replace the state law that lets emergency managers take over local governments in the event voters strike it down in November.

The behind-the-scenes effort, which doesn't appear to involve Republican House leaders or GOP Gov. Rick Snyder, aims to keep a form of the contentious law on the books while acknowledging some of the critics' concerns, which include that it takes too much power from local leaders struggling with budget deficits.

Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville told The Associated Press on Thursday the move is not an admission that the current law is flawed, but the new draft takes those concerns into account. He said he couldn't provide details about the alternative bill because the draft is under legal review.

"If something happened like that bill was overturned, I think the Legislature would have to be ready to respond and to still deal with the emergency," Richardville said. "You can eliminate the financial manager from the emergency financial manager legislation, but you can't remove the emergency."

The legislative tinkering is the latest twist in the battle over the law that went all the way to the Michigan Supreme Court last month. The state's highest court ruled a union-backed referendum to repeal the law can go on the ballot in November.

The law passed last year by the Legislature and signed by Snyder allows the governor to appoint people to run cities and school districts that are broke. Managers have sweeping authority to cut spending, sell assets and tear up contracts without the approval of elected officials.

The city of Detroit, struggling with record deficits for years, narrowly avoided such a takeover earlier this year.

The law has since been suspended until the election and replaced by the previous public act that gives emergency managers fewer powers. But that's also being contested ? a lawsuit was filed this week by civil rights lawyers that claim the "old law is dead" because there is no legal framework to support it.

Emergency managers are operating in Benton Harbor, Flint, Pontiac and Ecorse, as well as in school districts in Detroit, Highland Park and Muskegon Heights.

Richardville said a replacement will be needed if the law is struck down.

"It's certainly a priority to make sure we help these communities out," he said. "We've had some real concerns that people in these communities could go without crucial services unless somebody was in there and given authority to fix things."

In Pontiac, emergency manager Lou Schimmel said his city and others will be "runaway fiscal nightmares" if the law is overturned and there is no substitute.

"There isn't anyone in this city who could run this city. ... We're not there yet," said Schimmel, who was appointed a year ago.

A spokesman for Republican House Speaker Jase Bolger said that chamber's Republican leadership isn't working on a replacement bill and declined to speculate on whether it would also become a priority for the House if the law is repealed. Still, spokesman Ari Adler said Bolger is concerned about what happens to communities with financial emergencies if the law is repealed.

"Speaker Bolger supports Proposal 1, but ballot proposals are a time when voters have their chance to speak directly and it's important for legislators to listen to what they say with their votes," Adler said.

Likewise, Snyder is instead focusing on "making the strong case for why Public Act 4 is a critical and necessary tool," said his spokeswoman Sara Wurfel.

"We have an obligation to ensure continuity, prevent chaos and ensure health, safety and welfare of citizens, but can't work in hypotheticals and will have to cross that bridge if and when we come to it," she said.

Robert McCann, spokesman for Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer, said Democrats would prefer a bipartisan approach "rather than an end-around" by Republicans.

"They haven't shown great concern for community input up to this point," McCann said. "If this one is different, I think it would be a step in the right direction."

The Michigan Legislature has one session scheduled in October then doesn't reconvene until after the Nov. 6 election.

Spain Creates 'Bad Bank' for Real Estate - CNBC

Spain

Grant Faint | The Image Bank | Getty Image

It happened again: U.S. stocks moved up midday on news from Spain.

Spain says the capital shortfall for the 14 banks it surveyed was 59.3 billion euro. This is the amount that would be necessary to ride out a serious economic downturn. Half of the 14 banks need the extra capital. (Read more: Spain's Banks Need $77 Billion in Capital: Stress Tests)

Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the eurozone group, said he was "comforted" by these numbers and suggested the bank recapitalization ? and presumably, the 100 billion euro bank bailout ? can precede as scheduled.

Well, maybe.

Here's what I want to know: Spain has approved the creation of what is likely the largest real-estate company in Spain: the bad bank. This so-called Asset Management Company is the new "bad bank" that is going to take the toxic real estate assets.

But we know almost nothing about this bad bank: which assets will be included, how many banks will transfer assets (four banks have been nationalized, presumably they will certainly transfer their assets), and at what price? Who are the shareholders? (Read more: Cigar-Toting Rajoy Clashes With Spanish Austerity)

Here's an interesting question: just how bad is the real estate bubble in Spain? No one knows, but I have seen estimates that Spanish banks hold about 180 billion euros in real estate that is in or near default. (read more: Spanish Rescue May Throw Crisis Spotlight on Italy)

I am not aware of anyone who even knows how many houses there are for sale right now in Spain. One estimate I have seen puts the number at 1.6 to 1.8 million homes, which would represent about 6 years of demand.

And what about the prices for these homes? Most estimates I have seen state that home prices have dropped roughly 30 to 40 percent since peaking in 2008 and will continue to fall at least into 2013.

That's why this "bad bank" is so important. We know demand for homes will be fairly weak, but how this "bad bank" prices its real estate will be critical. Selling cheap ? which would accelerate the clearing of the inventory ? would put more downward pressure on prices.

Another factor: how easy banks will make it to buy these properties.

Sound familiar?

Innovation and Free Markets in America | David Goldstein's Blog ...

The Washington Post reported recently that ?Entrepreneurs Run Into Roadblocks? in France that prevent them from bringing innovations into the market. The article contrasted this problem to the situation in America, where entrepreneurs are more likely to succeed.

Promoting innovation is one of the areas of strong American leadership. America is the best place in the world to start a new company, whether a profit-seeking company or a nonprofit. America is the leader in entrepreneurialism both as a result of government policies that make it easy to incorporate and business policies or cultures that make raising capital and hiring workers easier than in most other countries. Just consider how the global Internet speaks American English as its primary language due to the dominance of American-based companies, or how the social media developed first in America, or how American retailers such as Amazon or Wal-Mart are expanding globally.

I have seen this strength first hand, as I have started or co-founded three nonprofit corporations that have grown to employ over 50 people.

Having an innovation-friendly economy is one of America?s undersung strengths, since innovation and new technology are the basis for economic development in the 21st Century. But America cannot simply rest on our laurels in this race; it must also develop policies that actively encourage innovation. These policies are not limited to removing bureaucratic barriers to new companies and new products, as the Post says the French need to do. ?They should also include policies aimed at correcting market failures that stifle innovation.

America may be #1 at promoting innovation, but we need to work hard to maintain our leadership. Both the private sector and the government must strengthen market forces and make markets work better.

Clean energy is an area where market failures stand in the way of innovations being accepted in the marketplace. For clean energy technologies, it simply is not true that if you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door. For many new technologies, economics says that markets will only work when a dozen or more assumptions are made, and for green products and services, the assumptions are false.

One of more than a dozen of these is the hidden assumption that consumers can act on their economic preferences. For example, suppose I want to reduce the energy consumption of my set top box for my TV. I can?t do that because the cable company owns the box, not me. And they don?t pay the electric bill?I do?so they don?t care how much energy the box uses.

This false assumption causes even bigger problems, in addition. Let?s assume that I want to add new high-technology windows to my house, along with advanced duct sealing and draft reducing improvements. ?The whole project will cost $8,000 and the energy savings will pay for the entire costs of an $8,000 loan every month. But I still need to come up with the $8,000 and no bank makes home energy improvement loans. Or suppose that I run a convenience store and I want to use advanced lighting and controls and a new combined heating and refrigeration system. The owner of the chain doesn?t want to borrow the money for it because even though the savings would pay back the loan fourfold, the additional borrowing would hurt the corporation?s credit rating.

To make it worse. four different categories of market failures make innovations harder to succeed that one would think. I discuss them in Saving Energy Growing Jobs. ?Undoubtedly clean energy is not the only field where there are barriers to the acceptance of new and better products.

For clean energy, we know how to solve this problem, and have been making progress in implementing this knowledge. New technologies for windows, for example, were developed in a government-funded research program, and their acceptance was spurred by building codes, recognition programs such as Energy Star, and financial incentives provided by many leading utilities. ?As a consequence, the example discussed in the Post article?a clean energy technology to power streetlights?would stand a better chance in America than in France. There are likely to be other areas where America?s leadership in innovation can be expanded even farther: ?where policy can make markets work better than they do now.

There is a flip side to this situation as well. America?s leadership in developing an innovation-friendly economy means on one hand, that business people have more opportunity here: they can make more money in America than they could in, for example, France. The flip side is that if the same person with the same intelligence and the same work ethic makes more money from being in the American infrastructure, then the fruits of this success?the income and the profits from innovation?were not produced by the entrepreneur alone. If the innovation could only succeed in America, then the entity that deserves the profit is not only the innovator but also the American economy as a whole. The success is a shared success: the personal efforts of the individual combined with the public provision of a business and legal climate that promotes and rewards such personal efforts.

This distinction is important because many of the policies that are needed to promote innovation?in the case of clean energy these include temporary tax incentives and energy production targets?cost money to implement. If successes are shared in monetary terms, our government can fund such interventions and still gain revenue and reduce our government deficit.

LLC vs. Corporation What Entity Is The Right For You ? headline news

Choosing the right entity

You finally decided to form your own legal entity. However, how would you know which one is the best choice for you particular needs?

To make this choice wisely it is important to understand the basic differences between various types of legal entities. This article focuses on comparison between LLC (limited liability company), one of the most popular business entities today, and various forms of corporation, namely C- and S-Corporation.

C-Corporation vs. S-Corporation

All corporations start as C-Corporations and are required to pay income tax on taxable income generated by the corporation. An C-Corporation becomes a S-Corporation by completing and filing federal form 2553 with the IRS.

  1. Taxation:

An S-Corporation?s net income or loss is ?passed-through? to the shareholders and are included in their personal tax returns. Because income is NOT taxed at the corporate level, there is no double taxation as with C corporations.

  2. Difference in income allocation:

Subchapter S-Corporations, as they are also called, are restricted to having no more than 100 shareholders, and cannot be owned by C-Corporations, other S-Corporations, many trusts, LLCs, partnerships, or non-resident aliens.

LLC vs. C-Corporation

There are three principle differences between LLC and C-Corporation:

  1. The entities are taxed differently:

An LLC is a pass-through tax entity, meaning that the income is not taxed at the company level (however, LLC is still required to complete a tax return). The income or loss as shown on this return is ?passed through? the business entity to the individual shareholders or interest holders, and is reported on their individual tax returns.

C-Corporation is a separately taxable entity, and pays tax on the income prior to any dividend distributions to shareholders. If and when corporate earnings are distributed to shareholders in the form of dividends, the corporation does not receive the reasonable business expense deduction, and dividend income is taxed as regular income to the shareholders.

  2. The entities differ in their structure:

LLCs are less rigid in their structure than corporations, so you have more flexibility in adapting the LLC to your unique business. The Operating Agreement of an LLC can be structured in a limitless amount of ways.

  3. Formality:

A corporation is a formal entity with officers and directors (at least one of each) required. An LLC, on the other hand, can be ?member managed? and run in a less formal way. For small, start-up businesses, less formality means you can focus on making money rather than administrative work.

LLC vs. S-Corporation

Even though LLC and S-Corporation have a lot in common, those two types of entities differ on the following:

  1. Difference in income allocation:

While S-Ccorporation special tax status eliminates double taxation, it lacks the flexibility of an LLC in allocating income to the owners. An LLC may offer several classes of membership interests, while an S-Corporation may only have one class of stock.

  2. Ownership restrictions:

Any number of individuals or entities may own interests in an LLC. However, ownership interest in an S-Corporation is limited to no more than 100 shareholders, and S-Corporations cannot be owned by C-Corporations, other S-Corporations, many trusts, LLCs, partnerships, or non-resident aliens. Also, LLCs are allowed to have subsidiaries without restriction.

Those are just the principle differences between the three most popular entities. However, when choosing to organize a business one should consider other less popular types of legal entities, as those might answer to particular needs of the business. Consider discussing your situation with a licensed attorney or a CPA, familiar with your situation and whatever requirements your state might have for forming various business entities.

Fans give refs a standing ovation

Rex RyanAP

When Jets coach Rex Ryan told Joe McKnight that he?s been traded from the offense to the defense, McKnight took that as an indication that he?s not good enough as a running back.

Ryan says that was the wrong message for McKnight to get. Instead, Ryan thinks McKnight should take it as a compliment that the coaches think he has the talent to move to cornerback, even though he hasn?t played there since high school.

?I think Joe misunderstood,? Ryan told reporters today. ?We?re trying to teach Joe our defense. The coverages and things like that. He still has a role on offense. It?s not that he?s being forgotten as a running back, that?s not the case. I want him to learn the coverages and things like that on defense. The way the league is now, you almost can?t have enough corners. They?re going three, four, five, receivers or something, so you have to be able to match up. The one thing I know from a physical standpoint, [is] that Joe can, from a talent and a physical standpoint, he can match up. He can run. He?s got size. He?s got some natural instincts, and that?s what we?ve seen. When we used to put him on scout team, that?s what we saw. Yesterday, he actually picked off all three quarterbacks. That?s a good thing and a bad thing.?

Ryan heard that McKnight took it as a criticism of his ability as a running back, and that he thinks he didn?t communicate well enough to McKnight.

?That was certainly not the message that I wanted to send to him, so I wasn?t clear on that,? Ryan said. ?He?s got talent as a running back. The one thing I know about Joe is when given an opportunity, as a kick returner, he led the NFL as a kick returner, so I think that?s pretty impressive. He was the number one kid in the country coming out of high school. His talent is pretty special. I had a coach from USC tell me that the day he walked on campus he was their best corner. They wanted to play him at running back, but that?ll give you an indication of the kind of talent that Joe has.?

Ultimately, a player?s job is to play whatever position his coach tells him to play, and if Ryan thinks McKnight can help the Jets more as a cornerback than as a running back, then McKnight is a cornerback. McKnight shouldn?t have a problem with that.

vassalage texes: Why Aerobics Exercise is So Important | Internet ...

Most people first think of how great they are going to look on the outside if they following an aerobics workout routine, and this is true it will give you an attractive, toned, and fit looking body, that people will admire and even envy.

The main motivation is not the external benefits but rather the internal health derived from a consistent cardio workout, which is coupled with good nutrition.

It has now been scientifically proven that a smoker who does regular and consistent cardio workouts exercises, is healthier than a none-smoker who don?t. This is not an endorsement of smoking of course, but to show how important exercise is for overall optimal health.

So what does aerobics do for my body?

Have a Heart

Well for starts it increases the blood flow hence the oxygen levels in the body, more oxygen means the body will become efficient in caring out its daily function. Increasing the heart rate during aerobics activity will build the muscles of the heart and over time the rest rate of your heart beat will be slower; this is because your heart has become much more efficient in pumping nutrient rich blood around the body, this decrease in heart rate during rest means less wear and tear on the heart.

Once the heart becomes more efficient due to consistent aerobics cardio, oxygen is transported around the body in more volume, more efficiently and this aerobics or oxygenated blood burns fat faster and more efficiently.

Regular aerobics workout will help prevent arteriosclerosis or heart disease and even prevent stroke by strengthening the heart muscle and keeping the arteries elastic and open, this will lower blood pressure and raise your high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels (good cholesterol) and lower your low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (bad cholesterol).

Aerobics workout does not burn cholesterol the way we know it burns fat, but what it does is stimulate the blood?s cholesterol levels and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides and increase HDL (good) cholesterol.

Your Brain Will Thank You

Regular cardio vascular workouts such as aerobics increases the ?brain-derived neurotrophic factor? (BDNF). BDNF is believed to play a key role in the regulation of mood. BDNF also help brain cells and neurotransmitters live longer, so exercise can prevent dementia.

Another major chemical produces from the amino acid L-tryptophan in the brain is serotonin or (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT). This hormone is a neurotransmitter in the brain and influences a lot of different brain functions. Regular aerobics activity is shown to increase the serotonin levels in the brain.

Serotonin is a critical chemical produces by the brain and influences control over appetite, memory and learning, mood, behavior, depression, sleep, endocrine regulation, temperature regulation, sex drive or the lack there of, cardiovascular function, and muscle contraction. Regular aerobics exercise is key in maintaining proper levels of this very important chemical.

Workout for Your Bone

like muscles bones are alive and ever changing, either for the better or the worst. Aerobics exercise strengthen bones just like it does muscles, stronger bones will reduce your risk of small fracture and weakening of your skeletal structure as you get older, which could lead to osteoporosis. Regular exercise also serves to lubricate the joints and reduce inflammation and prevent arthritis. So increase your bone?s strength and mass with some cardio.

Aerobics for Immunity

It has been shown that regular cardio workouts strengthens the immune system and enable it to fight off sickness and infection. The increased aerobic activity serves to expel airborne viruses and bacteria from the lungs before they have a chance to invade. Rapid blood flow throughout the body and the action of sweating during a workout also rid the body of toxins and certain carcinogens. Built up waste mater is excreted through the sweat glands and urination. That?s why proper hydration is important during a workout.

Antibodies and white blood cells are used by the immune system to fight invaders, regular exercise activities helps to circulate and distribute these fighters throughout the body, reducing the risk of infection and sickness.

So Strengthen, tune and tone your body with aerobics workout exercises, both on the outside but most importantly on the inside.

Staying fit and healthy is not a Fad but rather a lifestyle,

Here Are Pictures from the First Full-Frame Point-and-Shoot, the Sony RX1 [Photography]

Sony excited a lot of people who were down on point-and-shoots with the full-frame RX1. As the smallest full-frame sensor camera, it sounded like it could be awesome. But sounding awesome is different from looking awesome and with cameras, it's all about the shots right? Well, here are some sample shots of the RX1. More »

New Groups Make A Conservative Argument On Climate Change

Former South Carolina Republican Rep. Bob Inglis now runs the Energy and Enterprise Initiative. Enlarge Energy and Enterprise Initiative

Former South Carolina Republican Rep. Bob Inglis now runs the Energy and Enterprise Initiative.

Energy and Enterprise Initiative

Former South Carolina Republican Rep. Bob Inglis now runs the Energy and Enterprise Initiative.

One topic you don't hear much about from Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is climate change. Like so much else, it's become politically divisive, with polls showing Republicans far less likely to believe in it or support policies to address it.

But two new groups aim to work from within, using conservative arguments to win over skeptics.

Former South Carolina Rep. Bob Inglis has already paid a price for being out of step with his party. In 2010, amid a Tea Party surge, the Republican lost his congressional seat, attacked for ? among other things ? accepting climate science.

These days, Inglis heads the Energy and Enterprise Initiative at George Mason University, making a free market case for tackling global warming.

"We think free enterprise has the answer to energy and climate," Inglis said at a recent meeting of students with the Wharton Energy Club at the University of Pennsylvania. "There's an incredible opportunity in energy, if we just get the economics right."

Inglis proposes eliminating government incentives: no more tax breaks for solar panels or electric cars; no more subsidies for oil companies. Then, he says he would impose a carbon tax on fossil fuels.

?

We already pay more, he says, just in hidden ways, like detrimental health impacts from coal-fired power plants or higher insurance costs from extreme weather linked to greenhouse gases. This "market distortion," he says, leaves fossil fuel companies unaccountable.

"I get to privatize my profits and socialize my cost," he says, referring to how fossil fuel companies might view the status quo. "That's a pretty good deal as long as you'll let me get away with it."

Much better, he tells the business students, to pay the true cost at the gas pump or on your electric bill.

"Then, I, as a consumer out of enlightened self-interest, would seek out the company that you're going to found, that's going to supply me with the alternative," Inglis says, speaking to about three dozen students who intend to pursue careers in the energy sector.

Inglis knows any tax is often a turn-off. He'd offset his carbon tax with a payroll tax cut, but is open to other ideas for keeping it revenue neutral.

The business students seem receptive, though doubtful that such a thing would fly with the current GOP.

In fact, energy's become a surprisingly hot topic this campaign season. A slew of TV ads, funded by fossil fuel interests, echo Republican positions, pushing for more domestic production of oil and gas. One ad by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity touts coal as "affordable, abundant, and ours."

Romney's energy plan doesn't mention climate change and relies on boosting the supply of oil, gas and coal. When he announced it last month in Hobbs, N.M., he criticized President Obama's energy regulations, saying they make it seem as if the administration doesn't want people to use fossil fuels.

"That instead, they want to get those things so expensive and so rare," Romney said, "that wind and solar become highly cost effective and efficient."

Inglis chuckles at that.

"Well," he says, "they are in fact cheap by comparison, if you compare the full cost."

Inglis is confident he can win Republican converts. Alex Bozmoski, 27, has already sought him out.

"I took a climate science class in 2005," Bozmoski says, "with the explicit purpose of heckling the professor."

Convinced of a hoax, Bozmoski relentlessly pointed out uncertainties in the science. Until, he says, he realized uncertainty is the essence of risk. And in the case of climate change, this risk carries potential costs for everyone. Bozmoski now works with Inglis to persuade others. And they're not alone.

"I think our group gives them cover like, 'OK, let me go and see what this is all about,' " says Michele Combs, who's with the Christian Coalition, and recently launched Young Conservatives for Energy Reform.

Combs became concerned about climate and energy while pregnant, when her doctor told her not to eat fish because it contained mercury. She later learned that came from coal-fired power plants.

"The more research I did on this issue," she says, "I realized this was really a family issue. It affects everybody; everybody wants clean air. And it was really sad that it was such a partisan issue."

Combs has been organizing educational house parties around the country. Beyond health, they focus on national security and the large number of U.S. troops killed while transporting fuel. One thing she does not mention? The words "global warming."

"You know how when you hear something, and you immediately hear a buzz word, you immediately turn off?" she explains.

Both Combs and Inglis are careful not to sound alarmist. They want to reach those who may not even believe in climate change. Still, Inglis has thought long and hard about what he calls the "populist rejection" of climate science.

"For conservatives," he says, "it's seen as an attack on our lifestyle. You can't live in the suburbs. You gotta give up that big car."

He knows people don't like to be told what to do. But Inglis remembers his dad teaching him to save gas by letting up on the pedal and coasting. He says a party that once valued thrift now touts a philosophy of "burn it up."

"It's not conservative to waste stuff," Inglis says, "and to cause somebody else's kids to go on the sands of the Middle East to fight for that stuff that we're wasting."

At stake, he says, is the most basic of conservative principles: whether we leave our children a place that's pleasant and livable.

Ahead of the Bell: Research in Motion

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shares of Research in Motion climbed in premarket trading on Wednesday, as an analyst said that the Blackberry maker's second-quarter financial results may not be as bad as Wall Street is expecting.

Shaw Wu of Sterne, Agee & Leach says Wall Street is anticipating that Research in Motion will report a large decline in quarterly revenue and a big operating loss. The company will report its results on Thursday.

"With low expectations, we believe there is a fair chance that the company may meet or even slightly beat," Wu wrote in a client note.

Analysts polled by FactSet expect a loss of 46 cents per share on revenue of $2.43 billion.

Still, Wu says the second-quarter performance may not matter, as investors may focus more on the Canadian company's cash balance and its job-cutting plans.

In June, Research in Motion said that it would eliminate 5,000 jobs as part of a previously announced initiative to cut $1 billion in annual costs this year. The job cuts represent approximately 30 percent of RIM's workforce of about 16,500.

Wu says RIM had a cash balance of $2.25 billion in the first quarter. While it is anticipated RIM will face an operating loss in the second quarter, the analyst says that investors will be looking to see if the company was able to hold onto or even grow its cash balance by collecting on accounts receivables and working capital changes. This was something RIM was able to do in the first quarter, Wu explained.

The analyst reaffirmed a "Neutral" rating.

William Blair's Anil Doradla is concerned that RIM may not meet his quarterly revenue estimate of $2.3 billion as the company deals with intense competition and a weak product offering to consumers.

"Blackberry smartphones remain an afterthought in the consumer market," Doradla wrote.

The analyst says he doesn't believe there will be any major improvement in RIM's share price until the Blackberry 10 rolls out, and even then it remains to be seen if the new device will be embraced by consumers.

Doradla maintained a "Market Perform" rating.

Research in Motion Ltd.'s stock added 18 cents, or 2.7 percent, to $6.78 before the market open. The shares have lost more than half their value since the beginning of the year.

No comments - Call Center Outsourcing

Are you wondering why your colleague can finish all the tasks and still has time to enjoy a good eight to ten hours of sleep? While here you are, cramming with all your business? paperwork and emails at the wee hours of the night.

The sound of hiring someone to fill the position of doing administrative tasks like answering your calls, checking the email, accounting, etc., worries you about the expense of letting another person in to your company, tagging along company responsibilities like employee benefits and other needed actions for employee retention.

Worry no more about these issues that keep on nagging your mind. The outsourcing industry has offered yet another solution to your woes.

Virtual assistants, or commonly called as VAs, are the persons in charge to handle the tasks that is covered by the answering service. The VA can be a single person who owns and manages his/her own answering service business or they can be working for a Call Center Outsourcing company.

Most of the VAs work as self-employed individuals who offer services like administrative, technical, creative (social) tasks to professionals who need to gets all the work done. Most of the people who avail of the VA services are doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and other high-ranking people who need secretarial services, yet don?t want to hire a person literally.

VAs can also come from call center outsourcing companies which offer virtual assistance services to various clients?from individual professionals to small businesses. Outsourcing companies can assign one or a group of VAs to do the specific tasks that need to be done by the client.

There are an estimated 25,000 virtual assistants worldwide, an indication that it is a growing profession in centralized economies where high attrition staffing practices is rampant.

Hiring the service of a VA is one strategic move for any individual or business. VAs does not make their clients responsible for any employee-related taxes and any insurance and benefits. Clients are also saved from adding spared office space, equipment and supply. The only expense clients have to shoulder is the direct payment for the service, either to a single VA or multi-VAs.

But it should be remembered that self-employed virtual assistants are not employees but business owners; thus, they gauge their own rate and formulate their own standards and policies, pay their own employment taxes and control the management of his/her work flow.

VAs from Call Center outsourcing companies are managed and directed on what they have to work on. They are paid by the call center company they are working for. Thus, bear in mind that you are not their direct boss, but you are one of their customers.

The common modes of communication and data delivery are the Internet, e-mail, phone call conferences, online work space and fax machines. VAs in this business works in a contractual basis; thus, cooperation between the client and the VA is significant.

Many of the VAs specialize in tasks, that is why most of them are also called Virtual Specialists. Most common tasks that would be specialized by VAs include Marketing, Web Design and Programming, Social Media, Bookkeeping, Reception, sales and management. But besides these, most VAs can provide across-the-board administrative work.

Whether you are a professional that needs general secretarial services or a business owner who also needs to accomplish all the administrative tasks, the VA/VAs needed would depend on the volume, type and the variety of work that needs to be done.

VA services mostly come with minimum cost, compared to the expense of hiring an actual person for the job; thus, critics about the service have also surfaced. One common critic is that you get what you paid for. If you availed for an hourly service for only $3 compared to an hourly service of $5, you don?t have the full power to expect the most sophisticated work delivered to you.

Also, since VAs usually come from different time zones, challenges in communication and maintaining the contact is also questioned. Many have experienced disruption of service from VAs coming from three time zones away, so how much more for those from ten time zones away? There?s no need to worry that much about this. Many of these VAs offer free trial periods for you to try and evaluate their service.

In conclusion, the pros and cons of acquiring virtual assistance services are always present. After all, not all things are good enough. In the end, you are the one who?ll decide whether or not hiring a VA is a must for you and your business. Just weigh the pros and cons and your needs, and you can come up with the answer anytime soon.

Pedal-powered espresso cart a hit for java junkies

1 day

An award-winning pedal-powered espresso cart is generating buzz as a fine way for eco-conscious java junkies to get their daily fix.

Amos Reid Field and Lasse Oiva, graduates of the Royal College of Art in London, describe the Velopresso as a ?celebratory fusion of human power, sensory pleasures and technology -- old tech with hi-tech, bicycles and coffee, their engineering and aesthetics.?

Pedals on the modified tricycle push the cart down the road and grind beans, meaning no whirring motors to startle caffeine-deprived heads.?

Water is currently heated up with a tiny gas canister, though the team is exploring the use of turning old coffee grounds into ethanol to power operations, according to Inhabit.?

When this eco-friendly machine will be brewing your double-tall, extra-hot latte is unknown, but given winning recognition for design in the 2012 Deutsche Bank for Creative Expression and second place in the 2012 Pininfarina Design Contest, it seems as if this espresso cart has momentum.

Geniaus: Family History Through the Alphabet ? T is for ? Ten

The obvious choice for this T post would be Trove from the National Library of Australia but I'll leave that to someone else. In a blog post yesterday James Tanner spoke about "My top ten, can't miss, websites"; and that gave me an idea for a post. I am going to highlight my Top Ten Tools for Genealogy in alphabetical order (library training reigns).

Blogger ?Although I have toyed with moving over to Wordpress I find that, although it annoys me sometimes, Blogger continues to serve me well as a blogging platform that enables me to reach out to other genealogists.?

Chrome?Presently my browser of choice I love Chrome because it works so well with the other Google products I use and has a fabulous collection of addons that I access from my toolbar to make my browsing experience efficient and painless.

Evernote? My previous posts tell my Evernote story:?Family History Through the Alphabet ? E is for ?Evernote, Evernote - the presenter's pal, Google Docs and Evernote,?

Family Historian I took a great leap of faith when I ditched my genealogy database package in favour of Family Historian. Some of my posts describe the process: Family Historian Progress, I'm on a winner with Family Historian,?

Familysearch? As well as providing online access to many genealogical records Familysearch also publishes some useful blogs (I love Tech Tips) and the Familysearch Wiki. I have been fortunate to have early access to the new Familysearch Family Tree which is one of the most exciting initiatives for family historians in a long time.

Google Docs, I use this package daily as my Office suite and love that I can access my documents easily from all of my devices or public computers. Here is how I use it for genealogy:?Google Docs and Evernote

Google+ My social network of choice where I can organise ?my contacts easily into interest groups and target my posts to those who have similar interests. I have a huge circle of genealogy contacts here.

Picasa?Google's free photo management tool that I use everyday to organise, edit retrieve and share my photos. It copes with my 90,000 superbly (and doesn't crash).?

Trove? Our nation's treasure from the National Library of Australia has to be on my list. This site is the best thing since sliced bread.

Twitter?Although I don't use Twitter as much as I did before Google+ arrived on the scene I think Twitter is the best tool for sharing news and ideas from conferences and events. By following designated hashtags from events I can vicariously attend the event or, if I am there, can contribute to such an experience for others in the Twitterverse.

As James said in his post "So there you have the top ten for today. Of course, I may change my mind anytime."

The Emerald Necklace: A Hidden Gem | The Daily Free Press

Hidden beside Boston University?s South Campus, The Emerald Necklace is an accessible and serene place where students seek peace from their busy college lives.

The Emerald Necklace has many greenways to explore, and visitors can find the place that they connect to the most and spend alone time in their special spot.

?The landscape architect of the park, Frederick Law Olmsted, designed the public park in a way that appeals to the greater good of society,? said Christina Luke, a BU professor who teaches a ?Green Design and Cultural Policy? class.

Hit the spots

Popular areas of the Emerald Necklace include Back Bay Fens, Arnold Arboretum, Franklin Park, the Riverway, Jamaica Pond and the Rose Garden.

The Back Bay Fens is adjacent to the Museum of Fine Arts and other educational institutions.

?[It] provides a variety of recreational opportunities, from gardening, to concerts, to sports,? according to the Emerald Necklace Parks Map and Guide.

The Arnold Arboretum is one of the world?s leading centers for the study of plants, according to the Map and Guide.

Sports are a prominent part of Franklin Park. ?The Emerald Necklace is a big playground,? said Susan Knight, Director of Development for the Emerald Necklace, in a phone interview. ?I see students out in the park every single day. I see them near Northeastern, playing basketball, doing reading and other schoolwork.?

The Riverway is a narrow park that is adjacent to the Muddy River. Students are seen running through it, along many beautiful bridges.

Jamaica Pond is a popular destination for runners. It is also home to the Boathouse, which offers sailing and row boating.

?I enjoy my experience [at the Emerald Necklace] very much!? said Britta Dosch, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences. ?The parks are very well kept and always full of life and activity when I visit. They seem very well utilized by the public.?

Detailed designs

Olmstead?s design plans for the seven-mile stretch of swampy land included parks, ponds, bridges and benches.

?He specifically wanted the park to always be open to the public, to create an oasis for busy city dwellers,? Luke said.

These features attract people into the park from the surrounding neighborhoods and students from other colleges.

?The Emerald Necklace is an attraction to students because it is a linear park,? Knight said.

People in the park

The string of greenery allows students to see into the city, and hints at the potential for integrating nature with the demands of urban life.

Knight said that even today, the park serves its original purpose ? to bridge the gap between citizens and nature.

?The park is 1,100 acres. It runs through all the neighborhoods. Students can gather with friends in the park to get out of hubbub of everyday busy life,? Knight said. ?Research has shown that is critical to disconnect from everyday activities and work obligations.?

People of all ages are seen throughout the Emerald Necklace ? elderly couples sit on benches, basketball players shoot hoops and bikers zoom along the paths.

?It is also a way for students to commute to school,? Knight said. ?A lot of BU students live around the Back Bay Fens area.?

Student discoveries

Despite the lengthy stretch the Emerald Necklace extends, a number of students said they still do not know about its existence.

?I was surprised at the hidden gems, such as the Rose Garden, that are within walking distance from BU that I never knew about,? said Dosch.

Students who live in areas such as Brookline have easy access to the running trails that pass by Leverett Pond and Ward?s Pond and eventually leads to Jamaica Pond.

After Jamaica Pond, the trail turns into the Arborway, which rounds off at Franklin Park.

Students who intentionally visit the Emerald Necklace or stumble upon one of the green spaces in the immediate area said that they are transported to another state of mind.

Nature?s benefits

The Necklace is a place for Boston residents to take part in Olmstead?s vision to experience nature to become healthier and happier.

People are seen out walking their dogs and having picnics. The shade from trees cools down students and local Bostonians after a long run.

In addition to the health benefits provided by the numerous trees, the open greenery allows people to take a moment to step back from the constantly moving lifestyle of Boston and reflect.

The tall trees, walking routes and quiet rivers in the Necklace give students an opportunity to explore the city that they are a part of.

Where are the gay voices in ads for gay marriage?

Four states will vote on gay marriage this November, but gay people speaking for themselves have been?noticeably?absent from the TV ads promoting gay marriage.?

By Patrick Condon,?Associated Press / September 26, 2012

John, (l.), and Kim Canny, Catholic Republicans from Savage, Minn., in a commercial in which they say they oppose a proposed constitutional amendment this November that would ban gay marriage. Some gay activists question an ad strategy that rarely puts actual gay people on camera, saying it contradicts their philosophy of openness and hasn?t worked.

Each of these ads ran recently in states with gay marriage issues on the November ballot. What's missing? Gay people speaking for themselves.

Four states are voting on gay marriage this fall, and gay rights groups are pouring tens of millions of dollars into key TV markets in hopes of breaking a 32-state losing streak on the issue. But even as gay people and same-sex relationships gain acceptance through pop culture staples such as "Modern Family" and "Glee," the idea is still seen as dicey by media strategists involved in the ballot campaigns, resulting in ads that usually involve only straight people talking about the issue.

The decision to keep gays in the background has been widely noticed in the gay community and debated on gay-oriented blogs, with some activists complaining that the move contradicts the central message of the gay rights movement for a number of years.

"If we don't show ourselves, people aren't going to get comfortable with who we are," said Wayne Besen, director of Vermont-based gay rights group "Truth Wins Out," one of many that presses gays to live openly with pride in who they are.

But others counsel deference for the complexities of public messaging, pointing out that the ads are designed to speak to the fears and values of the heterosexual majority, whose vote will decide the issue.

"The moderate tough guys we need to flip to win a couple of these races are still the ones who say that gays are gross," said Andy Szekeres, a Denver-based fundraising consultant who has worked on several state campaigns and had access to focus group data. "Pushing people to an uncomfortable place, it's something you can't do in a TV ad," said Szekeres, who is gay.

The definition of marriage is on the ballot this fall in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Beyond those, according to the Human Rights Campaign, 37 states prohibit gay marriage while six and the District of Columbia permit it. Gay activists and their allies are hoping that any wins in November would throw new momentum their way at a time when polls nationwide have shown growing acceptance for gay marriage.

Six of the seven ads broadcast in the contested states this year have featured only straight people talking about the issue. One ad, which played only in Maine, included a firefighter who talked of being accepted by his colleagues. The ads, along with most that ran in the 2008 campaign in California and in other past statewide races, rely on heterosexual family members and friends of gays talking about how the inability to marry has deprived their loved ones of rights and opportunities they should have.

Gay marriage opponents, who also have well-funded campaigns in the four states, plan to begin airing ads soon. In recent interviews, an organizer said the key message is aimed at parents, suggesting legal recognition could result in their kids being told in school and in society that it's OK to be gay.

Tips For A More Successful Home Business | The Board Magazine

While home businesses are worthwhile, there is still fear associated with starting one. Where can you begin? How does a person make it work? There are many questions that need to be dealt with. This article was written just for people like you. It provides clear direction on how to successfully run a home business.

One of the most cost efficient ways of advertising is through the internet. Create a website yourself, or have a webmaster design a site that customers can navigate easily. Focus on creating site content that people love and offer them helpful features like online ordering. Make sure that satisfied customers have a way to keep in touch with your business. The following advice should help you in your endeavors.

TIP! Find competitive rates of businesses in your local area when trying to start your own. Set your prices to be competitive with the going rates of similar businesses.

Since a home business needs only a small website, invest most of your money in doing beta testing. This will allow you to confirm that your website loads correctly on assorted browsers, even mobile devices, and that your site content displays uniformly in each instance. Keeping your site the same on all different platforms helps your users easily browse your site from anywhere they look at it.

When generating product ideas for your home based business, start by considering products that would fill your personal needs. Customers want to buy products that solve common problems they face every day. By coming up with an answer for a dilemma you have personally experienced, it is likely that your idea will be easily marketable to others as well.

TIP! You should describe your business in a couple sentences, also known as a business objective. What your business does and its focus should be clearly described in your objective.

Be forthright and pragmatic with the prospects and goals you have for your home-based business. Are your products interesting, and do they capture the attention of potential buyers? Will you be able to run your business without resorting to shady tactics?

In order to succeed at being a home business owner, you have to be able to take knowledge-based risks to broaden your horizons. When you are willing to try new things in your business, you will find more people interested in what you are doing, which eventually means a bigger bottom line! Doing the same routine can prevent you from not knowing if you can do something better.

TIP! There?s a good chance that when you start operating a home based business, your volume of phone communication will greatly increase. For this reason, it is vital to setup a separate business phone line coming into your home.

Having a checking account designated for your business can help you keep track of your business spending. Funnel all your business transactions through this account. It?s the best and most accurate way to keep track of your business?s activity. If you need to place credit card orders for supplies, you should have a separate business account for that as well.

It?s crucial that you put together an in-depth business plan. Your business plan may change a little or a great deal over time.
