Mangere church members team up for weight loss challenge

A Mangere church group has helped members lose more than 200 kilograms after initiating a "biggest loser" training and eating programme.

And not only has it helped their health and confidence, but their fertility as well.

Although they celebrate every Sunday, today was a special occasion for 35 Mangare church members who were recognised for their weight loss after completing the 12-week programme.

The pride was obvious. Selane Magele has had health issues with high blood pressure, but today the 70-year-old was crowned the biggest loser, having lost 9.3kg.

"I'm very happy now," says Ms Magele. "All my clothes were bigger and now they are loose."

The initiative was inspired by Yolanda Ualesi. After getting married, weighing 130kg, she and her husband struggled for a year and a half to conceive.

"Spoke to the doctors and they said I had to drop 30kg before they could refer me to a fertility clinic," says Ms Ualesi. "But I dropped the 30kg and, bag, pregnant!"

The result was Tyler Rae. But the good news doesn't stop there.

"Then season two came about after Tyler Rae, and I lost 30kg again, and I've been blessed with triplets."

And she's not alone. Three other biggest loser members are also pregnant.

Ms Ualesi's dad, Pastor Vinnie Morisa, can't believe how the weight loss has changed people's mind set and confidence.

"What we've noticed is self-esteem has gone through the roof," he says. "You lose a few pounds, but when they look in the mirror it's completely different."

Season two's class of biggest losers is out, but season three begins next month.
